It definitely could have gone either way, all things being the same, even campaigning based on popular vote I'm sure Hilary would have won, but the thing is, if Trump was holding a rally in California everyday instead of smaller states, who knows what the impact could be? It wouldn't surprise me if the gap could have been smaller. It goes both ways though, maybe if Hilary would have actually campaigned she could have managed the 100,000 or so votes in the 3 states she so badly needed instead of ignoring them and just assuming she would win?
However, I think if elections were solely based on popular vote as opposed to the current electoral system Republicans would have been forced to change their ways by now, so this election probably would have had completely different candidates if we always had a popular vote system. It is kind of a moot point as everything, including our history would have been different.
As for the protests, I think they are silly just like the ones right after the election. Yes I understand it is your right, that doesn't mean it helps your cause, it can hurt it. Many who voted for Hilary accept the results and don't like seeing people whine in the streets because they lost. Focus on winning the next election, it is obvious many lessons still have not been learned by the left. I'm sure there will be plenty of reasons to protest soon, wait for an actual cause. Protesting because you lost a free and fair election is not going to gain any support. In before Russia (which didn't matter).
That's just my opinion, if you want to protest, go nuts! I just ask you do so peacefully and try not to cause too many obstructions. There is a good way to protest and a stupid way. There is a reason the OWS movement is known as a complete joke outside of this echo chamber, and also yes, the tea party is known as complete joke too but you already knew that.
