R.I.P. Bill O'Reilly R.I.P. Bill O'Reilly

Good luck to all his geriatric followers, who think the world is 6,000 years old and that the lack of prayer in schools as well as Jim and Mike walking down the aisle is what's destroying America, knowing what a ****ing podcast even is.

Hi Billy it's your Aunt Dianne. Can you come over and show me how to use the podcasts on my iPad?

LOL is TV Guide still a thing?
04-23-2017 , 05:23 PM
For the olds it is.

They'll probably panic when it's 7:05pm and they still haven't found Bill, and whip out a VCR that's been sitting in a closet since 1996
04-23-2017 , 06:47 PM
Words matter, so who's worse, O'Reilly or Hitler?

The olds love Fox News, not O'Reilly, right? Like, I don't think they're gonna lose much sleep over Bill as long as they get a healthy dose of fear mongering for 6 hours a day. So let's hammer this home with the olds that always thought he was a pompous ******* anyway. Everybody call your mom and tell her to stop watching Fox Rape Channel.

Not quite. Many many Fox viewers just lost their favorite show.

Nope. I clicked over to one of the articles (I think from FoxNews) announcing OReilly's canning and it was just post after post of "I'll never watch Fox again" and "Fox is dumb for firing their best host" and my favorite "OReilly was the only reason I watched Fox, now they're just full of those liberal pussies like Geraldo and Tucker"

OTOH what is the primary pastime of old whites if not fretting about being dispossessed of something specifically tailored for them and bent to their will? The American political system has been inexorably biased toward favoring the whims and desires of old whites since basically its founding and yet one of the most notable if not the most important facets of contemporary American political culture is that old whites are consistently decrying the opposite while getting progressively anxious things are getting worse and are paranoid they face systemic degradation of their standing.

In other words, these people are reflexively whiny idiots consistently preening how they're just about to give up on this country or that network for the latest betrayal and offense against whites. They'll just demand louder, dumber idiots who give them even more feels without actually disengaging and if Fox News is like a microcosm of America, they'll probably get it.

Like I'm not saying these are necessarily empty threats but their entire worldview is shaped by imagining new and different stabbed-in-the-back legends and it's not clear any of them actually quit FNC for long; it seems like they just like fantasizing about ways they've been betrayed by this or that. It would take a lot of money and other resources to build the kind of brand and cachet Fox does with olds so it's not like they have much choice here.

tl;dr summary: complaining about mistreatment and threatening people who besmirch white heros like O'Reilly is just a tic, not clear it's a meaningful signal.
04-24-2017 , 07:43 PM
Yeah they're tuning in for Tucker Carlson and Water's World on Monday, they're not switching over to Bill-Oh's podcast and Alex Jones.
04-24-2017 , 07:47 PM
Another way of putting it is that in this over-saturated media landscape, you have so much choice that you can land on a source that is almost exactly what you want. Those people landed on Fox News for a reason and it's the entire mosaic that Fox News has built, it's not dependent on any one host or talking head. They landed on Fox News for a deliberate reason (it was designed to appeal to their psychological profile) and the inertia of being on a certain media channel is very real.

Talking to old whites about right wing media all star personalities is like talking to campus communists about the revolutionary Soviets or something, like those kinds of people who would prattle on about all the differences between Lenin and Trotsky and Bukharin and Zinoviev or whatever. At the end of the day most normal people would just call them Bolsheviks and you could be forgiven for not paying much attention to the very subtle differences between them or their internecine battles.

That's what I feel like when I hear old whites and other assorted angerbear whites prattling on about right-wing media all stars and which ones they like and don't like. At the end of the day who can really tell the ****ing difference between Limbaugh and Carlson and Hannity and O'Reilly and Greg Gutfeld and whoever else these guys are? I'm sure to the devoted fan they can point to this single apostasy or that one time they said something that rustled their jimmies or whatever but they're all basically the same guys selling the same schtick and there's very little market differentiation and they're pretty much interchangeable. I suppose this could be a misread but I'm sure after a few weeks of swapping out O'Reilly for Carlson or Mark Levin or whoever, no one will notice or care that much.
04-24-2017 , 08:02 PM
Like set Michael Lewis and some of those sabermetrics guys plus some VC money loose on the cable news industry to come up with an off-brand right-wing cable news network to compete with Fox and I guarantee they'd have a sweet business model and a book in a few years about how they discovered a huge inefficiency in Fox News paying guys like O'Reilly tens of millions of dollars a year because they didn't correctly calculate his Value Over a Replacement Pundit which has to be pretty low.

My mom is a fairly moderate Republican I guess (hates Trump, but HRC likes to chop up babies so it's a Sophie's Choice for her). She never misses an opportunity to tell me I should read the latest Killing _______ book. So he must have some pull over her. I haven't been asked what's a podcast yet - but she knows how to watch videos on her iPad so she may just figure it out.

That and for some reason she never stops trying to get me to go to DC with her even though a) she can't walk very well at all and DC is all walking (even from handicapped spots) and b) when you're not walking you're standing around in museums, which kills my back and c) I know this because I went to DC with her, my stepdad, and a family friend like 5 years ago. The best hypothesis I have is that she thinks I will somehow turn conservative if I just spend enough time around all those monuments and history - but this conversion was thwarted by the extra variable of the family friend and her kids last time around.

It's just weird. Reminds me of a Kids in the Hall sketch set in the awkward aftermath of a kid coming out to his family:

"Brian, are you hungry? I'll make some food."

"Naw Mom, we just ate."

"Are you sure? I'll put a tray in the oven."

"MOM. We JUST ate."

"It's no trouble."

"I gotta go Mom."

"Well don't blame me if it's all dried out!"

Unfortunately, I'm assuming O'Reilly is going to make a bunch of money on the movie adaption of his Killing Reagan book (unless he already made his money selling the rights). It was filmed here in Atlanta and I lodged my protest by not submitting to be a background extra.

I DID MY PART!

EDIT: I didn't realize the movie already came out. It debuted on Nat Geo in October.

Wait a minute. He's doing these books about people who weren't assassinated now?

O'Reilly/Tucker handoff is sort of like when Mike took over for Joel on MST3K. Sure, they could both lay down riffs and causal fans probably didn't care, but Joel had his own subtle quirks and mannerisms and it took a while for diehard fans to really get comfortable with the new guy. Oldsters will still tune in, but the handoff may be shaky for a few weeks.

I was much more upset about the loss of TV's Frank. The show was never the same.

Bill O is going full on Nixon/Trump saying that "the truth will come out" but not actually saying what that truth is. I guess he has a secret plan to end all the allegations but will keep it a secret to not tip off all his enemies.

Not sure if it goes in this thread or not, but the woman who accused Hannity of sexual harassment said he didn't and only made unwanted advances towards her? Isn't that by definition sexual harassment?

Dr. Forrester/TV's Frank getting replaced with Pearl/Bobo severely damaged the show. Mary Jo is very funny on Rifftrax but that MST3K role just wasn't good for her.

There's a couple of harassment allegations coming out aorn. Looks like Ailes leaving didn't magically change the corporate culture.

Ex-Host Claims Fox News Hacked Her, Used Info to ‘Emotionally Torture’ Her Online

Quote:
The result, she says, was using information obtained from her private conversations to “intimidate, terrorize, and crush her through an endless stream of lewd, offensive, and career-damaging social media posts, blog entries and commentary.”

The activity began, she alleges, before she ever came forward to accuse Ailes, and continued up until now—months after both she and Ailes departed Fox News.
