If it's true that they did, it would be because it's a natural product. Anything occurring in nature can't be patented, which means it's impossible to make serious money from. The pharm industry's approach to this is either: 1) slightly modify the compound so that they can patent it or 2) try to discredit it or otherwise bury it. So while it's true that there's a bias against natural products in the industry, that also doesn't mean that every single product that doesn't make it from lab results into medical use was killed by the system, mannnn.

This stuff reminds me a lot of when employer defined benefit pension coverage was declining rapidly and the retirement industry and regulators kept floundering around (and continue to keep floundering around) trying to design a 401(k) style program that would give employers what they want (low stable costs) and somehow provide retirement income security to participants. Similar to the health care problem, the value of participant choice was (and continues to be) vastly overstated by technocrats and consultants designing the system. Actual people want simple, reliable, predictable outputs, but what they are given is overstated "opportunities" to put in more of their own money and take on more market risk.

I'm wondering what different ideologies will be recommending if these super expensive drugs and techniques start to become lifesavers for a very large number of people who would die without them.
