An effort to appear more relatable to the common folk, or an alien species trying to pass itself off as human to infiltrate the US government? You decide.

According to 538's Trump Score, Feinstein is the 2nd worst Democrat in the senate.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com...s-trump-score/

Highlights include a vote to reauthorize FISA and to confirm Mike Pompeo to lead the CIA.

The first sentence is misleading. The default of the page is not to sort by Trump score but rather the difference between predicted Trump score from the election margin and actual Trump score. This measure makes Feinstein look bad because CA was the second bluest state in the country in 2016. It is not a coincidence that the only D above her is from Hawaii, the bluest state.

In raw Trump score, Feinstein is way down the list behind the usual suspects like Manchin, Heitkamp, our wonderful special boy Dougie Jones, and even some potential surprises like Sherrod Brown and Tim Kaine.

I've been wondering for a few months now if/when Obama was gonna make his grand entrance to the midterm campaign. The sim writers went with a really interesting choice to have him start the cycle by flipping off the national progressive base for no reason.

That's exactly the point.

There's no reason for a senator from "the second bluest state in the country" to be voting for Mike ****ing Pompeo.

Feinstein's value above replacement California senator is below zero, while Manchin's value above replacement West Virginia senator is above zero.

Re: A Proper 2018 Senate Elections Thread

I agree with all of that. I'm admittedly nitting about presenting relative Trump score as determinative of the "worst Democrat in the Senate." That ranking should be judged by policy imo, roughly raw Trump score.

Obama could have just kept quiet, like he has on every important issue so far, despite his pledge to actually speak out if **** went crazy.

The fact that one of his rare political moments is to endorse a terrible person like Feinstein is ****ing horrible. He knows better, too. What kind of backroom bull**** went on that caused this?

Feinstein is well liked in CA. No amount of money in the primary or the general would cause her to lose the election. Obama probably owes her a few favors anyway.

FYP. There is an amount of money that could cause her to lose the general to someone like de Leon, but it's probably higher than what he could ever raise.

So after staying silent for two years as Trump takes a bazooka to everything, he decides to open his mouth to endorse 85 year old negative infinity VORP Diane Feinstein?

Obama gonna Obama.

I have nothing against him, but man he always seems to land on the most sub-optimal decision.

He'd probably go campaign for Lipinski in IL if he wasn't spited by Lipinski in the past. DLC and Third Way for life!

Some strong opinions ITT over an endorsement that doesn't move the election outcome needle at all one way or the other.

Dude owed a favor, this was a pretty harmless way to repay a debt.

Democrats are justifiably desperate for someone, anyone, to spit fire. For Obama to emerge from silence to endorse Diane ****ing Feinstein, while saying nothing about the literal WOAT, a racist criminal scumbag, and his enablers in congress, is infuriating.

I think we've all see enough of the Chuck and Nancy in bed with corporate America let's just be polite and this too shall pass bull****.

I'm more surprised at the shock and outrage of an establishment President endorsing an establishment Senator. Also the tradition of shutting up as a former President applies to commenting on the current President. It's not uncommon for former Presidents to endorse campaigns. Not saying Obama should be respecting that tradition given the circumstances but nothing he's done should be considered inconsistent or surprising.

Re: A Proper 2018 Senate Elections Thread

This is not a normal presidency. Every day has been surprising. Republicans seem totally fine playing full contact and Democrats are not willing to play rough and that's why they're losing.

Not doing the right thing because "it will look unseemly" is for the past or possibly a more normal future. Trump breaks this **** constantly. People would love if Obama called him out on his bull****.

Re: A Proper 2018 Senate Elections Thread

Right but he's not failing to call out Trump because he's disinterested in politics generally, so you can't really point to his silence on Trump as a reason to expect him to stay away from other political issues. Endorsing politicians is something that former Presidents do, so it shouldn't be surprising that Obama endorsed someone. Obama and Feinstein hold similar political positions so it shouldn't be surprising that Feinstein was the someone he endorsed either.

Reminder that today is the day that the Republican candidate will be chosen for these 3 states. All of the primaries are competitive and the general election in these states will obviously be close as well.
