Your argument applies in some way to, say, a man on the street type who just doesn't know a lot of stuff. You forfeit that benefit of the doubt when you choose to run for President.
That and his conduct, even if he didn't know, is appalling and plain crazy. He attacked the NYT and went on a rant about the media etc. If my boss or coworker wanted to know where the report I got for them was, and I told them I put it on their desk, and they started screaming that I'm a liar and I'm out to get them and then they find it under some papers the excuse for their conduct isn't that it was justified because they didn't realize the report was there. The correct response would have been to look on the desk to find it first.
At this point everyone knows Trump's MO. He invents his own version of events and then maximally bullies and lies to everyone around as if his version of events were true. Why anyone is trying to parse and justify his actions after the fact I don't know. Especially for an organization that's supposed to be critically covering him.
