They're changing the number of votes needed to force an end to debate, not the number of votes needed to confirm a justice

So they are just using the Reid rule to end debate?

Long term the demolishment of the Fillibuster is a great thing for progressive policies. The fact that it will be introduced by the Rs is just icing on the cake. Weather the storm and rebuild as quickly as possible

I have lived in NYC for 15 years and have never heard of Long Island.

Except they'll probably reinstate the filibuster whenever it looks like they're going to lose the Senate.

You couldn't afford the Hampton's?

Of course he is. According to the alt-right, Jews are importing non-white immigrants into America in order to facilitate a white genocide. You don't run the number one alt-right news outlet without subscribing to that view or at least finding it politically useful.

Lol. The Republican bemoaning that Democrats are forcing them to go nuclear are funny when they are asked the follow up question, "would you respect the filibuster for the next nominee?" and the mere thought of getting another conservative justice on the court overwhelms their self control.

Yea I saw a few posts saying Democrats should try the political angle of saying that the Senate should be consistent and get rid of all filibusters and when Republicans refuse paint them as only working for partisan gain.

It does sound pretty silly. Had to look it up on Wikipedia to make sure you guys weren't pulling my leg, lol. Sounds pretty boring tbh, but to each their own I guess.

It's a great thing if liberals ever get control of the Senate. Doesn't seem like that's going to happen any time soon.

What is it you think that will accomplish?
04-06-2017 , 01:57 PM
Nothing really, it's just fun to use condescending bullsh*t like McConnell does.
04-06-2017 , 01:58 PM
There are (supposedly) decent and well meaning people who don't like everything to be partisan hackery... but they're all already not Republicans, so there's no point.

Right...It's good for like 50 posts in this forum where everyone gets to feel good thinking they've really shown the world how the other side are just hypocrites! But turns out no one on either side gives a **** about hypocrisy.

If the implication here is Clarence Thomas being on the bench is a good thing - it's a horrible one. Apparently 61 votes should be required to keep disgraces like him away.

Yea that's correct, that's why I called it a political ploy. There are legitimate (from a political positioning perspective) reasons to use obfuscation though, namely demobilizing the opposition. If McConnell had come out and said, "We didn't put Garland up for a vote because we wanted to wait out the clock for a long shot and now we we're in power and we want a conservative judge and we can do it because we have the power" that sh*t would run on every television non stop and Democrats would have a concrete, concise talking point to broadcast.

Instead McConnell side steps any Garland talk and focuses on how indecorous the Democrats are. People in the know know it's all bs but it takes a few steps to get there and the more steps you can put in there the less mobilization there's going to be. Same with Democrats, they can't say "We want to get rid of the legislative filibuster because Democratic ideas turn out to be popular once implemented and the removal of the filibuster helps us do that while Republicans want to keep the filibuster because it lets them block legislation for ideological reasons and keep the genie in the bottle" because all you'd hear non stop is COMMUNISM, SOCIALISM, DEMOCRATS ARE GOING TO RAM FEMA CAMPS DOWN YOUR THROAT. Instead (hopefully) the focus would be on the consistency of filibusters across the Congressional agenda.
