Thanks to trump and the GOP, I finally decided to try out a vpn. Opera offers a free iOS/android vpn service, and its pretty snappy when you get a Canadian IP address. Like no configuration at all necessary.

I wonder how four years of this will turn out.

There is no possible way Spicey can keep this up. There will be blood.

Remember when you sign up for a VPN service, you're putting a lot of trust in that VPN service. They will have all your browsing data. Also VPNs are not 100% secure, but yes it's definitely a lot better than not using a VPN.

I'd snap call if practical. Unless you were looking for some crazy long odds. Kind of a pointless discussion though.

This is what always scared me - are there any VPN services out there that we know to be legit and/or trustworthy?
03-29-2017 , 12:03 AM
I'm using a Canadian one, which has pretty strict consumer privacy laws.

It's not perfect, but I'd rather they have my data than my ISP. I'm not doing anything illegal so I don't really care, it's the principle of the thing.

You can always set up your own VPN with a VPS. Biggest internet fail imo has been how almost everybody has chosen to outsource their data and services to for-profit 3rd parties. Granted, it's not exactly easy to DIY. But it's not really all that hard, either. Teh Freedomz are out there if you can be bothered to put in a bit of effort.

It is storming like mad in central Oklahoma right now. I wasn't sure I'd get to see his show tonight before the power went out, but I did. His bit about Nunes having his head up Trump's ass was rofl funny.

I won't even complain about the spoiler. Even if you missed it, they post every segment on youtube. My only interest is the first half hour. I could care less about the guests for the most part.

Your own VPN to where? Like, buy an amazon server and route all my traffic thru that? Because otherwise if I set up a vpn to my house I still have the same issue.

Edit

First issue I've noticed, I get a lot of Canadian search results in google.

I deserve 1 demerit for that. I promise not to post specifics about Seth Meyers here in a few minutes.

Can the EO that's rolling back climate change regulations be challenged legally in the same way that the EOs relating to the travel ban were?
03-29-2017 , 01:58 AM
Yes, but the issues that might lead to the challenge are way more obscure and no one on this forum can reasonably handicap the chances.

I know I can google it but I feel like I'd get a better response here. What is a VPN and why should I use it?

Lot of stories about Trump's cozy relationship with Poutine?

Stands for Virtual Private Network. It's like being on say a corporate network where the corporation communicates with the outside world but doesn't have to disclose which user asked for what data. The difference is that instead of it being a real network constructed out of cables and plugs, it's a virtual network kept private using the same technology that secures your communication for stuff like e-banking and e-commerce.

Edit: Oh and you use it because of this new law, where apparently your data is for sale or something (I haven't followed it in detail, I'm not American so idgaf). What VPNs offer their customers is identity concealment, often to evade geoblocking.

Colbert is en feugo. Last night had like 5 jokes that were "best joke of the show" level.

Lots of good ones tonight. Liked the one about if you open an account at Putin's Russian bank you get a free toaster and a dead journalist.

And now what's a VPS?

Virtual Private Server. You get a server from a host. It acts and looks like your own box but it is actually a segment of a machine shared with other VPS. You can get one of these relatively cheaply. I suspect lots of companies will have explicit vpn vps packages soon.

You can buy a vpn from a third party but as others noted you trust them.

Same goes with a vpn but it's easier to find a trustworthy host imo. Only caveat is if you use a host in the us you risk the government getting access to the computer your vpn is on. But it still protects you from your isp.
03-29-2017 , 04:12 AM
A VPN is what allows me to not completely lose my mind while living in China by making the internet think I am somewhere else. Beyond that I don't have a goddamn clue.
03-29-2017 , 04:25 AM
I thought ISP's were already selling our data.
