This is terrible. I've been thinking about how the London attack got a bunch of coverage, and something like this is hardly a blip. It's sad because you know hundreds of people get blown up every day, but it only makes a real splash when it happens to first worlders. It's just inconvenient for families when only one parent can't put their career on hold to take care of their child, and so the other parent always has to do that. It creates a family decision whicy may cost the family money and opportunities down the line. Which of course affects the child as well.

But yeah, it should be applicable for an ailing parent as well. Family leave sounds fair.

I mean, is it that hard to understand that a woman's body needs to recover some from giving birth, and that she needs a few months to. you know, care for the baby in a way that only a mother can?

In Norway it's framed as a baby's right to care. The baby had a right for the mom to care for the baby for something like 2 years and then have, at least, day care until they're ready to start school.

In Canada it's a year which can be split however the parents want except the woman must take at least 6 weeks.
