This is the equivalent of a 30-year-old woman using a using a fuzzy pic from her high school graduation on her Facebook page.

At first I thought RM did a bad job but the more I think about it, the better I like what she did. She knew there would be potentially new viewers not following that were tuning in for the first time. She took her time, explained how and why we need to know his taxes, then once she set the stage, she released them.

It's not her fault we are so tuned into instant gratification. That's a reflection of us as a society, not RM doing the job she is paid to do.

Someone making the terrible argument this is bad reporting please explain what she should have done?

Why does she have to report what is literally the best tax information on Trump that could be leaked?

DONT tweet this

BREAKING: We've got Trump tax returns. Tonight, 9pm ET. MSNBC.

(Seriously).

When 2 pages of a 2005 1040 is all you had

Because the left has been obsessing about the returns for the last 18 months.

For me the interesting question is whether a journalist has an obligation to sit on a newsworthy story if the source is trying to manipulate the journalist.

Because the entire world has been clamouring for his returns for three years including more than a million signatures on a petition and hundreds of calls to see them in this very thread.

So because they don't show a multi million dollar transfer directly from Putin they are not news and what she should ignore them?
03-14-2017 , 11:26 PM
If you're a known liberal media outlet and you anonymously get a tax return that makes Trump look rich as ****, decide to tease it only for the White House to blast out exact figures at the drop of a hat, then it might be time to consider your source.

I agree. She's a journalist. This is news.

That being said, her popularity is a mystery me. Almost every show is a half-hour school-lesson buildup, to a not particularly interesting revelation. Last Word with Laurence O'Donnell is a much better show.

I don't know about an "obligation" to sit on it, but there certainly isn't a requirement to hype it.

What a promo whore. Her show has the first look at his returns, which has been one of the biggest political stories in years and she has the temerity to send a tweet about it.

You realize she doesn't get to pick what is leaked to her right?

This. If she had just released his tax returns but not built it up like Geraldo's vault it wouldnt have been a big deal. She pissed off a lot of people by overpromising what she actually had.
03-14-2017 , 11:43 PM
you people are acting like they ran days of promos and commercials. She sent a ****ing tweet a couple hours before it aired! No rational interpretation can call this hyping or over promising. It's the absolute bare minimum of promotion in the modern era.

Yes that is promo whoring. If she had just tweeted "We have 2 pages of Trumps 2005 1040 form, tune in to see what is in them" that still would of been promo whoring and gotten people to tune in. But her original tweet sounded like a bombshell.

msnbc had a countdown clock for it. They didn't deliver. You don't put up a countdown clock unless you got something meaningful which they did not.

I do believe she didn't intend for it to go viral though like it did.

Media can no longer make these kind of mistakes. America is tired of it and now they've got a guy in charge who knows exactly how to pounce on it.

She doesn't have to ignore it but chuckles nailed it, it would've still gotten people to tune in but not had the hype and people hate it when you don't deliver. Presentation > Substance.

All for ****ing ratings. Wish our news outlets were news outlets, even if ratings wouldn't be as good.
03-14-2017 , 11:47 PM
countdown clock is ******ed and all news networks should stop that bull****

putting out a single tweet an hour before the show isn't a big deal tho

In this day and age a single tweet can spread massively. My 66 year old mom got wind of that tweet and was ready to tune in.
03-14-2017 , 11:50 PM
RM had to report it obviously, but I'm trying to imagine someone like Tim Russert building it up it like a breakthrough gotcha moment.

Maddow is frustrating. She's brilliant and has a lot to say, but unfortunately she chose to abandon objective journalism in favor of chasing ratings as an unfunny version of John Oliver.

So? She wanted people to tune in. She has a scoop related to the biggest political story in years.

It's a story. Period.

You are all so self defeating. Would it be ok for someone to report a couple years of his returns? How about all years but the most recent two? What about every return ever but there was no smoking gun or wrongdoing in them?

You are all mad there was nothing bad, not that she promoted and reported an obviously newsworthy story.
03-14-2017 , 11:57 PM
People are being way too hard on Maddow. What the hell is she supposed to do? She even followed up the original tweet with a second clarifying exactly what they had when she saw it was going viral. It does feel like this was leaked by someone pro trump.
03-14-2017 , 11:59 PM
BURN THE WITCH. MADDOW IS OVER. SHE WILL LOSE HER TOP SPOT ON THAT CHANNEL FOR THIS. GRETA VAN SUSTWRWN IS THE NEW TOP RATINGS SHOW. AM JOY IS A BLACK LADY.
