Yes. He resigned from the government, joined the army and went to serve in the trenches of the Western Front as lieutenant-colonel commanding 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers, 15th Scottish Division.

During the critical Normandy campaign of 1944, he took a great interest in the actions of 6 RSF, 15th Scottish, his old battalion, in Operation Epsom, the Battle of the Scottish Corridor, at the end of June. The members of the Chiefs of Staff Committee got a bit fed up with hearing about it, of an evening, in the historic bunker at the end of Downing Street which you can now visit.
