So cliff notes on what Russia did in general would be fantastic - are they being accused of hacking into election polls?
They have been accused of attempting to hack into party servers and communication, and then releasing DNC communication to Wikileaks via proxy. Various reports have indicated that this coincided with a possible shift at top levels in Moscow - the same sources claim that this shift was towards interfering directly with the US election. These dates also happen to coincide with contact between the Trump campaign and Russian officials. We know now that Flynn, a WH advisor and party to Trump's campaign, discussed sanctions specifically with the Russian ambassador to the US. The same person that Session met, and Session later under oath stated that he had no contact with Russian officials.
Russian hacking outlet "Fancy Bear" has been pointed at by CyberSecurity firms as the likely culprit behind the hacking. They have a trail leading to GRU (Russian military intelligence), amongst other things in Ukraine where they hacked mobile apps used by Ukrainian artillery forces. They were also behind what was most likely a state-sponsored effort to discredit WADA's report on systematic russian doping efforts for athletes.
There is no clear conclusion to be drawn yet, but it is looking very, very ugly at this point. The question to be investigated now is if this evidence points towards collusion, or if we're "merely" looking at Russian attempt at destabilization that exploited and / or coincided with amateurish behavior from the Trump campaign.
