They get away with it because spending awareness is inexcusably poor. There's no shortage of citizens who would go along with an increase, despite not being able to correctly identify the US budget plus or minus a trillion dollars. I honestly wonder if even half the US population knows how many zeros are in a trillion. Certainly a lot of them come from the same lot that think Planned Parenthood is BFD budget-wise and that NASA is like 10% of spending.
All you have to do is throw out the phrase "weakening our military" and they'll be on board. Can't seem to find enough money to bring schools up to a competitive level with the rest of the world or get a non-ass health care system going, but hey a couple more Army divisions and carrier group why not
