I don't think the US is headed toward a theocracy. In fact, I think the role of evangelicals is on a downward slope (see Pew religion polls). The GOP, which has been largely taken over by white evangelicals, has lost the popular vote in 6 of the last 7 presidential elections. If anything, the 2000/04 election was their apex, because they got a real evangelical as president. I do think the modern GOP platform does require an evangelical worldview, or simply lack of concern with actual policy, because one has to accept an alternative reality in order to support the agenda.
That said, I don't know whether to worry more about Trump or Pence. I think Pence could more or less manage to get a whole set of terrible, slightly disguised theocratic agenda items through Congress. I think Trump will have some "successes," but I don't think he has the discipline, commitment, knowledge, skill, or political acumen (in the Pres. LBJ sense) to successfully push an agenda through Congress. Pence is a guaranteed disaster, while Trump is definitely harmful, and a true disgrace, but with a much broader range.
When books are written about the 2016 election, I think we will see (to the extent not already clear) that Trump basically agreed to accept the conservative evangelical agenda hook, line, and sinker in exchange for their support, though I think his natural inclination is more along the lines of standard grumpy old man Fox viewer than true believer.
