The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: No smocking guns. The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: No smocking guns.

If he is going to make the mistake of inviting Milo, at least put him in a structured debate format in which Milo gets exposed. Whats even more egregious is that there there were no attacks at all on Milo's effusive and unwavering praise for Trump.

When he had Tomi on, she could hardly answer the contradictions between the administration and the GOP but the questions to Milo were largely related to his sexual orientation, questions that he has faced many many times before.

He is an idiot but they are 100% correct on the extreme lefts obsession with being PC.

Freedom of speech is for all speech. Even idiots.

I think it was stupid and wouldn't have done it, but Maher basically told Milo that he's an idiot and if there's anything that is Maher's thing it's free speech, especially offensive speech. Maybe it is idiotic to give Milo a platform, but so is throwing Maher under the bus for having him on the show. He has Ann Coulter on the show all the time ffs.

He is an idiot about Islam though, just like Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris.

(note: this was literally the first time I've ever seen Milo in anything other than a still photo)

Is this the left-wing version of free speech, just don't let them get a word in edge-wise?

Also let the internal purges begin, Maher is the first to go.

So who on the left is calling for Milo to be arrested for his hate speech? I want a list.

Interesting thread.

And the Milo Right wing version is to use a microphone to shout down the unaided opposition?

Not to derail but Hitchens and Harris are exactly right on Islam. All religion is poison to the intellect and freedom but of course some are worse than others.

There is a confusion about the argument against religion. We will do everything we can to convince people all religion is poison while at the same time defending everyone's right to practice one.

.

Who is calling for Milo to have his freedom of speech taken away by the government, the ONLY entity that can do so?

This is kind of a good argument in some cases, but it also sucked ass when Elia Kazan couldn't make a movie.

He was lame and dressed like a dude late for a my chemical romance show.
Maher was with Coulter forever. He routinely softballs a lot of terrible people.

Woah there. Hitchens gave his unequivocal support to the invasion of Iraq. It's hard to see how that was right.

I honestly have no idea what point you are trying to make?

Nobody should be trying to stop idiots like Milo speak.

The reason I probe on that question, most people who make that criticism (like our friend LordJvK) really don't want to see protests against certain kinds of speech. It has nothing to do with actual freedom of speech, but what they want is a freedom from criticism.

He was wrong on that.

Did I post that Hitchens was never wrong?

Not every single word they say is wrong, but generally they are wrong.

Wait, you think Tomi was railroaded when she was on? Lol. Nobody spoke over her. She just didnt have any credible arguments.

agree. republicans won't act unless their case is 110% airtight, since if they miss, they know they'll get primaried by angry trump voters. plus i suspect some of the more authoritarian republicans actually love what trump is doing. democrats otoh are afraid of their own shadows and i think it's pretty clear that pelosi and schumer never signed up for this.

No, even when those people are completely wrong headed. Debates, especially those when one side is so obviously correct, are won when the idiotic side gets to speak and be shown for what they are.

All fundamentalism and extremism is poison, including atheism. This is coming from an atheist.

Yeah, which is why the "free speech is about government control" argument is good in some cases.

As far as I'm concerned on the Milo/Berkeley issue, him being allowed to speak and protesters shutting it down is the perfect solution. That's a lot of freedom.

I agree but that also doesn't mean that a private party has to give a platform to certain viewpoints. So the way this plays out is, Maher has every right to have Milo on his show--and I have every right to protest that appearance by whining about it on forums and watching his show less. Noone is shutting down anyone's freedom of speech!

To shut down freedom of speech requires government intervention, such as an arrest. You were saying that people wanted to take away freedom of speech, so that's where my confusion was at.
