...but this is a pretty bull**** argument. It's basically pretty stark moral relativism or "winners write the history" form of moral adjudication.

I'm OK with complex legacies but actually venerating a bunch of slave holders should be moral turpitude even if they successfully led a revolution or wrote wonderful political prose. Like I said, I'm loathe to go further down the right-wing clown show whataboutism rabbit hole but the "Jefferson and Washington were national heros, Lee was simply a traitor" is as much an accident of history than anything to do with their moral character, and the audience for these forms of arguments are basically only mindless patriot types. Which is fine. We take the easy wins when we can get them.

But we should not become wedded to the idea that "did historically significant things" is some Get Out of Moral Reprobate Jail Free card.
These arguments miss the point. We aren't talking about Lee vs Jefferson, but Lee monuments vs Jefferson monuments. The Jefferson monuments were built to celebrate ideals that we still accept, and i think will for a long time. The Lee monuments were built to say that even though the confederacy lost the civil war, the notion of white superiority was a noble cause that needs to be celebrated/persevered. Of course if the Jefferson memorial was built to celebrate/justify slave raping it should be removed.

I agree...I think my initial statement could be overly simplistic. My main point is that times change.

but let's be honest: those Confederate monuments were not erected to celebrate achievements...they were erected to intimidate black people.

Andrew Sullivan makes a good point about Trump's nuclear rhetoric. Trump said this:

Quote:
“North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States,” Trump warned Tuesday. “They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.”
Within hours, North Korea was threatening to attack a US Territory and Trump did nothing.

Remember all the OUTRAGE when WEAK OBAMA said that the use of chemical weapons by Assad was a "red line" and then didn't do anything when they were used? Once again, Trump is judged by a different standard. Because he lies and bull****s constantly, any particular piece of bull**** is unremarkable. It also helps him that people don't want to harass him about not attacking North Korea, in case he does it.

The Bush admin fired several US Attorneys for refusing to sign off on memos related to voter fraud.

Twitter bots are now all over the peaceful beautiful Charlotttesville rally tonight. Twitter needs to adopt a full real name policy. You want the first amendment to express your hate? Then stand the f up and be seen.

Where are the good guy hackers just destroying these idiots? Been waiting and waiting for that to occur.

The good guy hackers have careers and lives and stuff.

Imagine the sort of person who has one of the most in-demand skill sets in the 21st century economy who chooses to sit at home and create botnets. That is never going to be a well-adjusted person with positive social values.

The Bush administration was the grease that let Republicans slide into Trump. The politization of the Civil Rights division lead to the now White Civil Rights Division, Chaney's VP isn't part of the executive nonsense to avoid scrutiny, channeling anti gay sentiment into electoral success, etc. Trump's just a grotesque version of the homespun simple man who tells it how it is

What can we do to move beyond this? It's bee a whole day already!

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) signaled on Wednesday that he’s tired of questions about President Donald Trump’s controversial comments on the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“You tell me what he needs to say so we can move beyond this,” he told reporters, according to the Cap Times. “He said it once. Again, I’m not going to speak for the President, I speak for myself.”

Johnson continued to express frustration over foreign policy and budgetary issues he said were being ignored in the meantime.

“We can continue to harp on President Trump’s reaction to Charlottesville, but from my standpoint, I’m concentrating on finding areas of agreement and doing everything I can under my committee’s jurisdiction and what I can do to improve the situation,” he said.

Man this whole "lets merge the 'alt right' movement with the actual nazis" doesn't seem like a winning strategy to me.

Here's a tip - if in the past few days you've found yourself bouncing around arguing for free speech absolutism, arguing that antifa is just as bad as neo-nazis, and making a point about who had a permit and who didn't - yeah you're a racist.

Corker ****ed up. If Democrats don't pounce on this and run ads using this clip, they're stupid. (So obviously they won't.)

Corker said, "I love ya, George Soros is somebody I meet with often." and "I meet with him on Ukraine and other issues all the time. Are you filming me?"

Pro tip: don't admit on camera to meeting people your party demonizes.

http://prospect.org/article/steve-bannon-unrepentant
Bannon said he might consider a deal in which China got North Korea to freeze its nuclear buildup with verifiable inspections and the United States removed its troops from the peninsula, but such a deal seemed remote. Given that China is not likely to do much more on North Korea, and that the logic of mutually assured destruction was its own source of restraint, Bannon saw no reason not to proceed with tough trade sanctions against China.

Contrary to Trump’s threat of fire and fury, Bannon said: “There’s no military solution [to North Korea’s nuclear threats], forget it. Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that ten million people in Seoul don’t die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don’t know what you’re talking about, there’s no military solution here, they got us.” Bannon went on to describe his battle inside the administration to take a harder line on China trade, and not to fall into a trap of wishful thinking in which complaints against China’s trade practices now had to take a backseat to the hope that China, as honest broker, would help restrain Kim.

“To me,” Bannon said, “the economic war with China is everything. And we have to be maniacally focused on that. If we continue to lose it, we're five years away, I think, ten years at the most, of hitting an inflection point from which we'll never be able to recover.”

Bannon didn't know he was being interviewed? He thought he was anonymous leaking? Best of the best. Media pro.
