The one legit answer is "Because they weren't Muslims", so let them say it out loud. If they dodge, force it. Force them to show their darkness overtly. Force the surrogates to show it on TV. Make your family members stare in the mirror at their own bigotry during Thanksgiving dinner.
And most importantly, get the Democrats to fit this style of messaging into every assholic discussion they have with Rs about their worldviews.
Something similar played out in real time yesterday at the poker table as everything was happening in Charlottesville. The news of a car driving into people broke, and a Trumper who had basically announced (unprompted) that the Russia investigation was, "the most bull**** thing I've ever seen in politics,"
told everyone about the car and started complaining about Black Lives Matter and how violent they are. He said they were chanting White Lives Matter in Charlottesville and it was great. He talked about how horrible it was that BLM was so violent and it was scary. He mentioned not being racist, OBVIOUSLY.
I knew there was like a 99% chance the person who drove the car into the crowd was a white supremacist targeting protestors, but I kept my mouth shut for the time being. When the news came out that they caught him and it was a white guy, I announced it to him. Wouldn't you know? He got real ****ing quiet.
He did mumble something about it being good that they caught him.
