I don't think polling works the way you think it does. It's not just call random numbers and tell people your results. There's a bunch of assumptions that get made about demographics and who is actually going to turn out and vote.

One of Nates big points (which seems validated) was that the polls in these states weren't independent and shouldn't be treated as such.

It's more likely pollsters had the same or similar imperfect assumptions about the voters in these states than the people were lying in their answers.
