The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: No smocking guns. The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: No smocking guns.

We got a WaPo "what's happening inside the White House right now" story!

‘Category 5 hurricane’: White House under siege by Trump Jr.’s Russia revelations

Quote:
President Trump — who has been hidden from public view since returning last weekend from a divisive international summit — is enraged that the Russia cloud still hangs over his presidency and is exasperated that his eldest son and namesake has become engulfed by it, said people who have spoken with him this week.

The disclosure that Trump Jr. met with a Russian attorney, believing he would receive incriminating information about Hillary Clinton as part of the Kremlin’s effort to boost his father’s candidacy, has set back the administration’s faltering agenda and rattled the senior leadership team.

Even supporters of Trump Jr. who believe he faces no legal repercussions privately acknowledged Tuesday that the story is a public relations disaster — for him as well as for the White House. One outside ally called it a “Category 5 hurricane,” while an outside adviser said a CNN graphic charting connections between the Trump team and Russians resembled the plot of the fictional Netflix series “House of Cards.”

Per someone from NYT on CNN this morning: NYT had the email and were preparing to print it in today's edition. They called Diaper Don for a comment. He said he had no comment, then released the email on his own.

I honestly think a generation of indoctrination is blinding Republicans to their play here. They have gotten away with getting high on their own supply for like 25 years, and now they are such full-blown addicts, hooked on gaining and retaining power spewing pure bull****, they can't stop without suffering serious withdraw symptoms.

The play here seems obvious: dump Trump, get Pence in there, jam through right-wing agenda. Then go home and sell the base that yeah Donald was MAGA but something Democrats, win the primary selling the right-wing agenda Pence rubber stamps, victory.

It isn't even like they'll lose power! The House is straight up rigged for the GOP and they defend functionally zero seats in the Senate. In 3 years they can just go right back to their usual shenanigans, aided by another few rounds of voter suppression, and dupe their dumbass voters to pulling the lever for them yet again.

I don't know what Huckabee's motivations are exactly, but Hannity took millions of dollars from the Koch network for content that he inserted into his show. Whatever he really believes is about as relevant at the beliefs of "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiasi.

I think this is valid. I think Putin has a ****load of compromat on Trump. I also think the timing of this is suspect. Trump just had the G-20 meeting. He plays nice with Putin and announces a joint cyber task force, but then when he gets **** back home he tweets that he was just kidding, he was bluffing the Russians, etc. That pisses Putin off. Like next day, boom this story starts drip drip dripping because Putin wants to give Trump a taste of what will happen if Trump crosses Putin again. Putin almost certainly has far worse compromat than this.

Some gems from that article:

Quote:
A handful of Republican operatives close to the White House are scrambling to Trump Jr.’s defense and have begun what could be an extensive campaign to try to discredit some of the journalists who have been reporting on the matter.

Their plan, as one member of the team described it, is to research the reporters’ previous work, in some cases going back years, and to exploit any mistakes or perceived biases. They intend to demand corrections, trumpet errors on social media and feed them to conservative outlets, such as Fox News.
...that's actually a little scary

Quote:
Some top officials, as well as outside advisers, had earlier suggested that the White House conduct its own internal review to identify any potential problem areas related to Russia so that it can release the information on its own rather than be caught unaware by news reports. But that notion went nowhere, in part because officials were afraid to discuss any potential Russia interactions that could make them targets of Mueller’s probe.

One White House official went so far as to stop communicating with the president’s embattled son, although this official spoke sympathetically about his plight, casting Trump Jr. as someone who just wants to hunt, fish and run his family’s real estate business.
LOL

You cant be pardoned pre-conviction.

Rancor at White House as Russia Story Refuses to Let the Page Turn
The emails were discovered in recent weeks by Mr. Kushner’s legal team as it reviewed documents, and they amended his clearance forms to disclose it, according to people briefed on the developments, who like others declined to be identified because of the sensitive political and legal issues involved.

...

Advisers said the president was frustrated not so much by his son as by the headlines. But three people close to the legal team said he had also trained his ire on Marc E. Kasowitz, his longtime lawyer, who is leading the team of private lawyers representing him. Mr. Trump, who often vents about advisers in times of trouble, has grown disillusioned by Mr. Kasowitz’s strategy, the people said.

...

Asked about the use of the term “treason,” Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the principal deputy White House press secretary, said, “I think those new words are ridiculous.”

Yep, as you've learned the answer to Wookie's question is 'Yes he was.'

Remarkable, isn't it? I've seen both him and Sting (the wrestler) on those testimonial shows.

trump set the litmus test for his base when he said he could shoot someone on fifth avenue and get away with it. imo he would have to either actually do this or even go a level beyond for his supporters to begin to question the management.

remember-- in the heart of every trump supporter lies their greatest fear, and unfortunately these voters have been hoodwinked by one of the best into thinking #maga will reverse an irreversible trend.

Crappy part about this story is that now I have to watch Hannity.

i have a feeling that after mueller submits his final report somebody like mcconnel will have it permanently locked away under 24/7 guard in the same army base basement that houses the cia torture report.

in the end a few no-name guys will have to do some years for optics, though upon their return i'm sure some cushy consulting jobs will be lined up to thank them for thier service.

I have a different take on Mueller's statement today, mainly because WTF is he doing making a statement to the public? Since when does his team talk about parts of their investigation?

It bothered me enough to come to the conclusion that Mueller already has this Jr/Jared/Manafort meeting, or some information surrounding it or emerging from it.

To me, it seems like this statement was designed to throw off the Trump team and make them think there's still time before they get too close for Trump's comfort. I get the feeling like something really sensitive is being held back from this story.

This is obviously a pretty big deal but I still don't see anything coming from this mostly because you need Republicans to be on board with any meaningful steps and that isn't happening (at least not yet). I had to drive hours for work today and so flipped through Limbaugh, Hannity and the like and they are all going hard in the paint for Trump still which means a lot of people will be brainwashed by that and nothing changes. Well that and this being time number 147 that the bombshell dropped that would be the end of DJT. I'd bet a lot of money on him still being President at the end of the year and probably a decent chunk on him still being President at the end of 2018. After that it will mostly depend on the midterm elections.

Maybe Putin just wanted to give Trump a jerk on the puppet strings as a reminder, but I can't see Putin abandoning Trump lightly. More likely he presses his advantage and hasn't been sitting idle since the election. After all, he has the GOP implicitly colluding with him. This is his chance to really screw up American government. He's just going to take his winnings and call it a day? No.

Putin has already done some meddling in Congressional elections and red is definitely his color. Some in the GOP should be seeing that too; this is their chance to take essentially permanent power. The Supreme Court was just the beginning. They're so close to getting their way on policy after policy. What's a little collusion with Russians next to that? If Putin has or can get compromising information on a few key leaders... He's oh, so close. The ring of power is almost his!
