She definitely planted the seeds for this whether she knew it or not.

As for this Clovis spat, I think it's wise to remain nuanced when discussing complex topics like racism and discerning different forms and degrees of racism rather than lumping them all together. Just because the right has decided to take a bat to intellectual discourse doesn't mean that we should follow it up with the coup de grâce. Doing so does not make racism acceptable but it allows us to address people as individuals (or at least in smaller demographics) which makes helping them see things differently an easier task.

Ultimately, somebody has to stand in favor of intellectualism and not allow themselves to get bogged down in fights between anti-intellectuals.
I would stand up for nuance with someone I have an inkling of respect for like Bill Maher or Clovis, but **** Palin. She deserves to be treated disrespectfully. I'm polarized enough to feel like she's not just someone I disagree with, she's the enemy.

Since Spotify appears to have all CTH episodes now, are there any more recent ones you would recommend starting with?

The recent Sarah Jones episode of Chapo was good.

I'm watching this Putin/Trump special in Rachel's time slot and WOW, the parallels from Putin's uprising and Trump's administration are frightening. No doubt at all that Trump has studied Putin intently for a long time. He knows the playbook too well.

Naaaah. Manafort, Stone, Bannon? Someone else did the studying.

Trump's general rise is probably more like Joe McCarthy and based on their mutual advisor Roy Cohn.

Trump has of course studied nothing.

The truly terrifying thing is what the version of him that has could do.

Tom Cotton is going to run for President in 2024 on a blood and soil platform and he's probably 50% to win

While we're arguing over whether Palin was being explicitly racist by using "14 words", Trump's speech was a long form version of the 14 words.

Trump could have certainly taken the Republican primary in 2012, but no way he wins the presidency vs. Obama. Ditto for 2008. He's not beating W in full "I'm a War President!" mode in 2004. Could he have managed it in 2000? Interesting question, that.

Basically, a Trump white supremacy takeover requires complete dysfunction from both the Republicans and the Dems. It's not something that could happen in any election cycle, but maybe once every couple of elections there's an opening.

I don't think Trump would have had a chance in 2000. For him to have any chance it needs to be post financial crisis. That's really when things started to get crazy and the populism picked up.

Trump would have been live in 2012. Trayvon Martin died that spring, which turned a whole hell of a lot of white people against Obama, but Romney couldn't capitalize because he thought the GOP's disdain for the poor was actually directed at all poor people and not black people, specifically.

The Apprentice didn't start until 2004. I know none of us ever watched that show, but I'm not sure Trump would have won before that.

Trump modernized (lol) the Republicans. A few years back they were thinking they had to be more inclusive. Nah, go full racist and bring in more whites. easy game. Guns God Racism the futures bright.

Don't forget stopping black people from voting!

I watched The Aprentice, at least in the beginning

Cmon bros. You're feuding over some bull**** when you could be discussing this masterpiece.

I'm not an economics expert either but I do teach high school economics in China in a program for Chinese kids who plan on going to US colleges.

That sentence reads like something one of the tenth graders who only got into the program because his parents know the right people and can barely speak English would write on an exam to answer a question that has nothing to do with supply or demand.

Well, I'm sure he'll do fine at Texas A&M.

Just found out two weeks ago that four of out of the 25 kids that graduated this year are going to Baylor. On one hand given their abilities they really shouldn't have all that many options wrt US universities, on the other hand I want to strangle my boss for having no idea that this school has the single lowest reputation of any university in America and protects football players who rape students.
