Morning Joe and Mika just told a story of how Trump has been blackmailing them with the threat of a bad story in the National Enquirer if they didn't call him up and bow to him. They said the Enquirer has been harassing Mika's teenage kids and the rest of them, following them around and they have been getting calls from top WH officials saying to just call the POTUS and it will all go away.

The outcome, with a potentially profound effect on U.S. economic and foreign policy, will be decided in coming days.
With more than 20 top officials present, including Trump and Vice President Pence, the president and a small band of America First advisers made it clear they're hell-bent on imposing tariffs — potentially in the 20% range — on steel, and likely other imports.
The penalties could eventually extend to other imports. Among those that may be considered: aluminum, semiconductors, paper, and appliances like washing machines.

One official estimated the sentiment in the room as 22 against and 3 in favor — but since one of the three is named Donald Trump, it was case closed.

No decision has been made, but the President is leaning towards imposing tariffs, despite opposition from nearly all his Cabinet.

In a plan pushed by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, and backed by chief strategist Steve Bannon (not present at the meeting), trade policy director Peter Navarro and senior policy adviser Stephen Miller, the United States would impose tariffs on China and other big exporters of steel. Neither Mike Pence nor Jared Kushner weighed in either way.

Everyone else in the room, more than 75% of those present, were adamantly opposed, arguing it was bad economics and bad global politics. At one point, Trump was told his almost entire cabinet thought this was a bad idea. But everyone left the room believing the country is headed toward a major trade confrontation.

The reason, we're told: Trump's base — which drives more and more decisions, as his popularity sinks — likes the idea, and will love the fight.

I'm sure John McCain is DEEPLY CONCERNED about the upcoming trade wars

Progressive Liberal: Yeah I'm from DC you moron listen to the announcement
Fan: well i didn't hear it
PL: then use some Obamacare and get a hearing aid

He had another great line.

Obviously I'm thinking what you're thinking. 10 days after the damning interview the guy dies mysteriously. Are the details of his death being hidden by the Feds?
The WSJ reporter who broke this possible Flynn collusion story was just on Morning Joe and they asked him about the cause of death. He said it was a great question, that they reached out to family and friends and even local investigators, but can't get an answer.

It all started with a Russian mobster. Now the gun lobby is buddy-buddy with Moscow and attacking anyone who dares question the Trump-Putin nexus.

Even the reporter who did the WSJ story says he does not know, and has been stonewalled in his efforts to find out. I can't even think about what it would say if he didn't die from natural causes.

It's hard to say what comes next, but one thing we can do is look at history and see what has happened when other oppressive regimes have seized power and used it to dominate a people completely.

Some 1.5 million people were killed during the Cultural Revolution, and millions of others suffered imprisonment, seizure of property, torture or general humiliation. The Cultural Revolution’s short-term effects may have been felt mainly in China’s cities, but its long-term effects would impact the entire country for decades to come. Mao’s large-scale attack on the party and system he had created would eventually produce a result opposite to what he intended, leading many Chinese to lose faith in their government altogether.

Let's not start some left wing version of the Seth Rich nonsense. It's hardly shocking an 81 year-old might die.

Starting a trade war is horrible economic policy and will likely be disastrous for us, but despite disagreeing with it on the merits, I do not object to Trump doing it... if that makes sense. A huge chunk of his voters wanted it, he won, and even if his presidency is possibly going to prove to be illegitimate, this is one of the few policies he and his supporters champion that's not intentionally hurting other Americans.

He won, so if they get this, congrats. It'll suck for them as much as it will for all of us, if not more, but then hopefully we can move on and never try it again.

Well you have to understand the long-term thinking here. Trump wants trade wars because he knows they will bring economic disaster, panic, riots, and chaos. When he gets that, he can use it to get an even tighter grip over the entire U.S. government.

That's where I disagree. I think he believes they'll work. I could see Bannon plotting that, though. Also keep in mind that if and when they fail a lot of his base will be hit hardest and in ways that he could actually lose a lot of them... at which point any unrest could be more detrimental than beneficial.

Is it possible that Trump just has some kind of condition that causes him to see women as if they were covered in blood? People are all caught up in his misogyny/adolescent bulling, but I bet that freako doctor of his is giving him some kind of homemade, yage-based statin.

The thing is, he's going to use the unrest to get rid of what little smoldering remains of our electoral system still exist. And his base is never going to turn on him, certainly not for simple economic disaster. It's a fascist death cult. It was never about them getting health care or any other tangible benefits.

Trump is part of the billionaire class and pretty much all his friends are rich ****s.

Any trade "war" by him will be purely symbolic and be completely at the margins small ball.

Trade sanctions are counter to the very heart of conservatism. It's like a Catholic arguing the Pope is a fraud. I don't understand how they will ever allow them.

They're not conservatives, they're fascists.

einbert, get down to earth and stop ruining the credibility of this community. your like a useful idiot to the right wing that claims we have dumb conspiracy theories in the left wing forums.
