I have no problem going indefinitely without it affecting me emotionally. Most people aren't able to do this and generally they'll be the ones to drop it.
For me arguing with a Trumpkin is similar to arguing with someone that believes the Earth is flat. It requires very little effort and doesn't really make me mad as much as it makes me incredulous that someone could be so stupid. Also, my goal is not to really persuade them (as that's impossible in most cases) as much as it is to let them know how terrible I think their arguments are. What they choose to do with that is up to them.
I have one relative who was a Trumpkin before Trump was in politics... He was part of the hardcore right wing that was racist/ignorant, even if he didn't admit/realize he was racist. You're describing one of my favorite strategies, and one of my favorite ways to try to bring it back to their political policy arguments versus mine was to just refuse to engage on any of the deplorable/stupid nonsense.
"Yeah, yeah, Hillary's e-mails, Bill's affair, Pelosi's you have to read it, none of that matters... That's all games to avoid discsusing what matters, and there are any number of them on either side. Instead of trading Hillary's e-mails for Pence's e-mails and Bill's affairs for the Alabama governor's and so on, I'm interested in talking about actual policy. You said you wanted to do X, it would actually cause problem Y because of reason Z. That's why we should do liberal suggestion A with minimal infringement on conservative idea B to regulate marketplace C without interfering too much with private business."
Usually their response would be something like, "Yeah but I just don't trust that Obama guy, he's a Kenyan blah blah blah," at which point I know that deep down they realize they don't have a clue what they're talking about when it comes to policy. They're just rooting for their team.
