I can't find anything yet online about it, but CNN reports Supreme Court has struck down a couple of controversial laws. One would prohibit offensive or disparaging trademarks. In this case, the trademark office denied trademark registration to a band called "The Slants" on the grounds that the name was disparaging to Asian-Americans. But the court held that this would be a violation of free speech.

In the second case, the court struck down a North Carolina law which prohibited registered sex offenders from any use of social media. The court ruled this was overbroad.

I don't know the breakdown yet on how the court voted, but I like both of these rulings. I continue to have more faith in the judicial branch than Congress or the executive branch.

on the NPR podcast "Planet Money" there was a pod about the "slants" case a few weeks ago where they interviewed the lead singer of the band (who is asian). this was before the SCOTUS decision came down.

Yes. This ruling is seen as affecting the Redskins case as well.

So, make an agreement not to talk about things, and when the other party breaks the agreement, it's up to you to just agree with their bull****?

Yeah, great agreement there

Man, remember when Hillary said she wanted to establish a no fly zone in Syria and the Trumpkins said that that was proof that Hilldawg was the biggest warmonger to ever warmonger and that she was going to start a war with Russia and therefore Trump is the one with the more dovish foreign policy and maybe all those Russian ties and the pee tape are good things so we don't go to war with Russia? Good times.

I know LFS means well, but the arrangement he proposes is basically a lock for oppression. Let white people oppress from a position of privilege without ever calling them on it, and you're gonna have more oppression not less.

Trademark case was 8-0, splitting 4-4 on the rationale. It's not a controversial prohibition, it's been around 200+ years. Considering sending out an email to clients, "Time to file your offensive trademarks!" May be a bit of a goldrush.

Haha. Yes. Its interesting how the more liberal interpretation would be to applaud the court's decision, while of course believing that its probably not a good idea to use offensive trademarks. The marketplace seems to take care of these matters adequately.

He still hasn't said a peep about the 7 dead US sailors, so probably not.

He might talk more **** about London's mayor.

for those of you who venture into the right-wing derposphere, has this conspiracy about congressman Scalise being targeted due to his push for legislation to curb human sex trafficking come up?

a good friend of mine (sigh) who has increasingly fallen victim to conspiracy theories sent me an article on some website i've never heard of about how the shooting was tied to human sex trafficking. i read the article twice. it provided zero evidence at all linking the shooting to any particular piece of legislation, just that it's something Scalise is pushing. i emailed him back telling him how absurd that is and how the "reporter" has also pushed pizzagate and seth rich conspiracies. he texted me saying we would have to talk in person, he doesn't want to send any articles with further info over the internet.

my buddy is an otherwise, really smart person. i realized a while ago he's starting to head down a dangerous path when he made me watch an 8 min YOUTOOBZ video about the Rothschild family owning all of the world's central banks.

I thought I saw a tweet with condolences and thanks to Japan for their assistance. Meantime, in the Muslim case, probably a good chance he'll say nothing. Slight chance he'll endorse it.

You're right, his thanks to Japan tweet got hidden between tweets complaining about witch hunts and poll numbers.

Republican analytics firm exposes 198 million US voter records. Oops.

If Quebec City is any indication, we won't hear word one from 45 about this on Twitter or anywhere else.

He tweeted an hour after Hilary though. Leadership. SAD.

Just FYI, Gorsuch didn't participate or vote on either of these cases.
Only special fast tracked cases -travel ban?- are going to have his name on it at least through the end of summer.

On the bright side, now we have proof that Trump isn't colluding with Russia

Doesnt confirm my world view = fake news. Also fake news is a very dump term.

Fake news was a fine term when it was applied correctly.

I was about to post the same thing.

CNN does have lower verification standards than other news outlets. I know my friend who works for a major news outlet in Canada complains that they will run the headline much faster than other networks on major news not because they have better information, but rather lower standards.
Still isn't what was close to what was defined as fake news, which was completely fabricated stories often linked on Facebook by Russians and alt right news sites.

Yes. This was a huge pre-election issue, that Hillary would start World War III and Trump would bring world peace and make Russia our bff.

Russia played the crap out of Trump's entire campaign staff and now that the incompetence has been shown to be complete Russia is now going to push and push and push because they know they can. Meanwhile Team Trump will cry into their pillows like a jilted lover over being betrayed by those who fed them the election and were so friendly.

Putin has played this masterfully. I just admire the fact Trump would have to go back on a year plus of outright Russian support and praise that was mirrored by a large part of his base.

Since we have no state department and Trump will agree to whatever the military wants, in the end, we are in for quite a cluster.

Not being flippant at all, but I would love to see a study to see if there was any correlation between conspiracy theorists and people who were molested as children. I doubt it is a huge percentage but I would not be surprised if the number was statistically higher than the general public significantly.

These dumb conspiracies are doing no favors for children who are really being victimized.
