It also seems to somewhat contradict what he told Lester Holt ("I was going to fire him irregardless for all intensive porpoises")

Rosenstein's days are numbered IMO. If he recuses, Trump snap fires him, if he doesn't it's a yuge conflict since he's going to be at the very least a witness in the investigation.
