You are living in some kind of The West Wing fantasy world where compromise is rewarded. That **** is gone, man. There is zero upside to playing nice with the Republicans at this point. How many examples do you need to realize they are never going to meet you half way?

Voters have already shown they don't care. The Republicans blocked a Supreme Court nominee for a year and it didn't hurt them at all. If anything, voters have been encouraging this kind of behavior.

Look, I understand the desire for good governance. It's a noble starting point. But you can't let it cloud reality. If the Democrats keep turning the other cheek, the Republicans are going to keep pulling their pants down.
I've never watched the West Wing and I'm not advocating compromise for compromise's sake, much less compromise in the hope that Republicans will reciprocate.

But there may come a time on certain issues when compromise is more helpful to the people who rely on the government than obstruction is. And if that time comes, I don't really care whether the GOP would do the right thing or not.

When both sides decide that winning and making the other side look bad are more important than good governance, the battle is lost imo. Sometimes the move that shows real spine is to adhere to your principles even when it would be more expedient to abandon them.

I also think that Democrats need to get over the idea that the only path to victory is to emulate the tactics of Republican establishment, or God forbid, the tactics of Trump. As an empirical matter, I don't think that's true.

And as many have said, most of the time, opposing Trump will be the right thing to do as both a tactical matter and as a matter of principle.

She is a dying breed, a centrist. She may not survive 2018 and I'll assure you that you will miss her when her seat turns red. What did she do to prompt your post?

She's playing to the fact that she's up for re-election pretty soon in a state that went wild for Trump.

Gorsuch is 49, which means he'll be on the Court until 2050, maybe longer, if the reports are correct. Yay social regression

Is there some reason to suspect it will be Gorsuch? Reading about this, Pryor seemed by far the worst, and so my prediction was that it would be him.

Keep bitching about McCaskill...

Do you even know what the pure bred R-MO replacement will be?
01-31-2017 , 08:00 PM
You liberals keep slitting the throats of your moderate centrists. It will end up an R Supermajority.

She's going to lose in 2018 anyway, spending the last two years of her Senate career doing anything but obstructing Trump is just free gifts to the Republicans.

Oh, right, because the Republicans gutting their ranks of any dissent hurt them so badly? You are clueless.

http://edition.cnn.com/2017/01/27/po...innipiac-poll/
It's 36% approval with 44% disapproval, which means 20% came down in some middle zone. It's not like he's in "most hated man in America" territory. The same poll shows that 43% think he will be good or great president. This poll was taken before the Muslim ban, so there's a solid chance that many of the people in the middle zone were waiting to see if Trump fulfilled promises on national security. I wouldn't be surprised if the post Muslim ban polls show higher approval numbers.

I hope no one here ties their enthusiasm in opposing this odious Muslim ban to its popularity. While it's important to get elections to reflect the will of the people, since we are and like to consider ourselves a democracy, on the other hand, the will of the people is a terrible barometer of right and wrong. Many have no clue what's going on. For instance, from the same Quinnipiac poll:

Quote:
Working in Trump's favor: Slightly more say that Trump has good leadership skills (49% to 46%), and large majorities believe that he is intelligent and a strong person.
I haven't read the wording, so I'm hoping they just meant he's "intelligent" in the sense that an extra-terrestrial whose ship crash landed in the jungle would conclude, after observing monkeys, that our planet hosted "intelligent" lifeforms.

McCaskill clarified to say that she meant a vote for cloture (requiring 60 votes) which is fine. Don't have a problem with that at all.

I am not sure if she will lose, party identification isn't that strong in MO. It ill depend on who she runs against and if she gets primaried by Kander.

I can't believe a month ago I was arguing Dems should work with this disgusting orange piece of garbage. At this point, any dem or republican who helps him on anything should be considered an enemy of the state.

Dems should do everything possible to stop in on every single thing he does.
