The Russians I know want the sanctions removed because it hurts them but not any rich people. The sanctions also offer Putin a convenient scapegoat on why the Russian economy is ****. That scapegoat allows he and his cronies to bleed the country dry without taking any responsibility for it. It also creates anti-American sentiment in Russia which can be used to further solidify his base.

Sounds about right for the state that America's in.

Quote:
During meetings with the president, Bannon, Pruitt and their allies came armed with reams of documents filled with numbers and statistics showing what they said would be the negative effects on the U.S. economy if the United States remained in the climate deal. They were, in the words of one Republican in frequent contact with the White House, “ready to go to trial.”

“They were presenting facts and figures,” Conway said. “They were really important. That was the evidentiary case.”

Some of those opposed to pulling out of the pact, however, said that much of the data the other side presented was either erroneous, scientifically dubious, misleading or out of date.

The image there is clearly made up or pre 2003 when the Secret Service was part of the Treasury Department.

Seems like Trump is winning here...hmmm. He's reverse-draining the swamp and solidifying loyalty.

What would it take for Trump to get the majority of America's support?

He lost votes today, for sure. The 51% of Republican voters against pulling out of Paris reflects a good amount of people financially affected by this, many losing their jobs and livelihoods. This includes a lot of rich people too.

I'd go as far as to say the above is a larger portion of his base than those who care about climate change.

"Jared Kushner, a senior White House adviser and Ivanka’s husband, agreed with the president that the Paris agreement was a bad deal. He felt that the carbon emissions standards were too high and that a U.N. fund that helps developing countries counter climate change was costing the United States too much. But he, too, felt Trump should not withdraw but simply renegotiate better terms."

WTF! It is a non-binding agreement! It served as nothing more than a sign of worldwide solidarity regarding our environment and recognition of the negative impacts global warming has on all of us. We had to put out some kind of plan but there were no penalties if we didn't meet our goals. We could have written down our plan on the back of a dirty napkin and it wouldn't matter.

"“He’s stayed where he’s always been, and not for a lack of trying by those who have an opposite opinion,” said Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president. “He started with a conclusion, and the evidence brought him to the same conclusion.”"

He was never going to change his mind. Can't teach an old dog new tricks.

He saw numbers and went "Oh, those are big." and never questioned the sources or reliability of those statistics.

I thought of that. The printing date on the form hung 2014 is 1988. So, if it's all true, that form was printed while the SS was still in Treasury. The date on the one hung in 2017 is 2005 when SS was in Homeland Security.
