In that moment he became president.

I thought he became president when he hopped into the big boy truck? Someone will have to make a compilation of the Cheeto's most presidential moments.

So Texas is voting on a "show your papers" law and protests have been pretty big. But this is key, ICE, in these guys' eyes, is a tool to be used to punish anyone Hispanic

Cool when the Brits sing their national anthem

Not cool when Trump does it.

Hopefully demographic changes and hippies moving to Austin can save Texas before it's too late.
05-29-2017 , 02:04 PM
The hippies have been fleeing Austin for 20 years. It's all techies now.

Any of this line of thinking forgets how bad it was right after we said no to going into Iraq.

That might do too.

My friend who lived in Austin is a techie, but kind of a hippie too. He did move back to Cali, but may go back again to Austin at some point.

But, there's still all the music stuff, no? I know it's a lot of "country", but if they call it "Americana" is that hippie for "country"?

Reminds me of a joke from somewhere. "We got both kinds of music here: country and western."

Ain't a whole lot of country music in Austin, or whatever the heck Americana is supposed to be.

And shame on you for not knowing that line is from the Blues Brothers

Blues Brother's first gig after getting the band back together.

If Trump has taught us anything, its that nothing is permanent (good or bad).

But as far as I'm concerned the 'special relationship' is mostly bull****. There are things that are mutually beneficial to both sides that we do. But that's about it.

Basically. The relationship wasn't great at the end of Chretien, it was up and down during Harper, was good with Trudeau until Trump came in and we'll see what happens next.

I don't know much about Memorial Day but I'm sure the First Family are right on the ball.

Ah. I had a mental block. My first thought for a brilliant line like that is The Simpsons, but I couldn't place it there so I was stuck.

I thought the UK had the "special relationship" with the USA? Guess we've both been shafted rotten by them recently.

This reminds me of that Mel Torme singing to Kramer scene.

If I didn't know it was Trump, I'd think it's kind of nice that they brought up a special needs adult, or a guy who caught a mortal round in the head during the Vietnam War given the occasion.

UK is the "special relationship" but Canada is a closer relationship. It's close enough that it doesn't require flattery or at least it didn't in the past. It's not just Trump though, but 9/11 hysteria. When I was a kid you were just waived in or out of Canada or Mexico. A few years ago I was in Michigan near the border and couldn't visit Canada because we didn't all have passports.

I think most people here agree that Trump is just a symptom of some general problems within the US society and that there is "something off" since the past years decades. The political climate is poisoned, the media (infotainment like Fox, CNN and MSNBC) is over sensationalizing everything. And Lobby-ism shows some horrible results (industrial prison complex). Trumps America isnt new, it is just showing the other face of the USA in a very blatant way and he is exposing all the flaws within US democracy.

The big problem here is; there is absolutely no sign, that this is getting any better. US political debates become more and more radical and US society more and more divided. We are at a point were US society is in fact living in the same country but in different realities.

Just let us look past Trump. What will happen when he is gone? It is hard to imagine that the GOP and its voters become less radical after Trump is gone and start to fix all the flaws within US democracy together with the democrats. The Dems might win the next election, but the next time the GOP wins, they will install someone as authoritarian as Trump but competent. Trump has shown in the most blatant way, that it is easy to abuse power. The guy fired Comney because he felt to much heat in the investigations for gods sake.

Instead of it getting any better it is just way more likely that next chance the GOP gets, they dismantle what is left of American democracy.
