I think it was Chris Hayes a few nights ago who had some people on talking about Manafort and they seemed to agree with your assessment (maybe you got it there?) about him. They were saying that he has no real ties to anyone in the GOP who matters and though he served as an "advisor" on several previous campaigns (most recent of which was lol Bob Dole) he'd never actually run a campaign before...yet he was THE TOP DOG on Trump's campaign up through the convention. There was really no reason to put him in charge of anything more complicated than a local animal shelter but for his ties to Ukraine and Russia, and the speculation was that he was specifically hired because of those connections.

Yeah, that was an astoundingly bad take. The thing Ford was BEST at was interacting with people! You were mad about garbage pickup? Having watched Trump's embarrassing performance today, I think it's high time NATO seriously considered expelling the US. It's unfortunate that the majority of the country is clearly appalled at their president's behaviour, but he's deliberately undermining the alliance at every available opportunity and his administration is arguably the second greatest current threat to world peace behind ISIS. The civilised world ought to stand together and shun the US until this toxic POS is removed from office.
