so if you can stack the court and get x number of years to set decisions, that is massively valuable.
I don't think you understand how this works. If a Democratic government were elected, the travel ban presumably would disappear overnight (it damn well better). The Supreme Court doesn't have to do anything in order for the travel ban to go away.

Your general point is valid but the travel ban will be rescinded immediately after the next Democratic President is sworn in.

I voted today in the primary run-off for Trey Gowdy's old seat.

At my precinct (suburban-ish, lily-white upper middle class, large age spectrum) Republicans outnumbered Democrats almost 2:1 (44 Democrats voted, 84 Republicans). The low Democrat turnout actually concerns me less than the low Republican turnout excites me (assuming its a representative sample). The Republicans had two super high-stakes runoffs, and a half dozen local seat runoffs to boot. SC district 4 was between former State Senator Lee Bright, who makes Louie Gohmert look like Elizabeth Warren, and William Timmons, who seems to be a slightly more establishment version of Trey Gowdy. The deplorables were out in force for Bright, but the debate was interesting--Timmons flat out announced that if Bright were elected, he would shoot SC in the foot; his pet project has always been a transgender bathroom bill, and he's prone to saying stuff that would make Don Blankenship cringe, and I think that actually has resonated a bit with business leaders, because he (Timmons) was able to raise several million dollars from Super-PACs and saturate the airwaves. As for governor, it's been a hot enough race that it brought Donnie boy down here to stump for his guy last night, so it's a super high-profile race to be sure.

On the Democrat side, we literally had one runoff, and it was for Trey Gowdy's seat, with two rather uninspiring candidates--a local woman who seems to have some charisma and a good attitude, but zero political connections, money, or experience, vs. an uninspiring former Biden staffer who has been soundly beaten a few times before vs. Republicans in the district. Even a lot of my super-politically-active friends who helped me get out the vote in 16 were super 'meh' about even bothering to vote, as its clear neither candidate is going to (by themselves) increase turnout and flip the seat.

So for that reason, I am not too concerned by low Democratic turnout, but am cautiously optimistic to see low Republican turnout.

Edit: NY Times just dumped a crap ton more votes, forget the whole post. My precinct is apparently not representative as overall turnout was actually good for Republicans, and understandably terrible for Democrats. Bleh. Also looks like my preferred candidate lost.

That said, I expect that McMaster winning the governor primary is marginally better for Democrats chances of winning (however unlikely). McMaster did well in Columbia (the capital) and the rural parts of the state, but the cities went for the challenger Warren. Even though Warren was challenging from the right, I don't think that's the right lens with which to view this particular race; the state government is very corrupt, and McMaster is for many the face of the corruption. The Democrat challenger, James Smith, seems to be well-funded and very competent, and his platform is more anti-corruption than progressive, which will resonate better in South Carolina. The (D) still makes him an incredible longshot, but I imagine the city and suburban (R)s are more likely to vote (D) or (I) in an individual race against corruption than the rural voters.

I agree with bobman's post. Making it expensive to them is some deterrent (same as with crimes).

Obstruction has other (much bigger, imo) benefits. This is the norm that gets stretched to breaking point - if it's standard politcs then limits to obstructive behavior apply, when it's trump & co then pretty much everything that can slow them down is good.

not really. I mean in terms of "free". this country has never been free. we were just gaslit for our entire childhood about american values and exceptionalism. but if you read our state provided history books, they even dont depict such a thing.

dude cmon. no he wont. the employees wont be layed off by trump. they will be layed off by harley. so they will blame harley and still vote for trump. this is like the easisest thing ever.

LOL why is she even engaging them? It's like getting involved in an internet flame war. Nobody is changing their mind and nothing is getting accomplished. Just close the browser page and move on with your day.

I don't know if I or you would consider it disenfranchisement, I'm sure the GOP would, but I'd be fine with an age limit for old people voting. I can't see why an 85 year old can vote and a 16 year old can't.

Ffs guys. We need to stop talking about what the dems should do when they next win.

It's the equivalent on Weimar politicians debating the constitutional role of the chancellor in 1936 germany.

That ship has sailed, we are losing, we will keep losing until something changes dramatically.

That Trump tweet is one of those ones where I'm torn between stupidity and disingeuity as an explanation. Think I'm going with stupidity, though.

And she seems pretty damn great. Trump is cheering the Crowley loss when in the meantime it could be bad for Trump.

This is how you know he's a moron that only sees wins and losses. To him, this is a win because the guy that lost doesn't like Trump. He's so stupid he doesnt understand that the winner isnt on "his side." He's a ****ing moron.
