About 2,000 children have been separated from their families at the border over a six-week period during a crackdown on illegal entries, according to U.S. Department of Homeland Security figures obtained by The Associated Press Friday.

The figures show that 1,995 minors were separated from 1,940 adults from April 19 through May 31. The separations were not broken down by age, and included separations for illegal entry, immigration violations, or possible criminal conduct by the adult.

Under a “zero tolerance” policy announced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Department of Homeland Security officials are now referring all cases of illegal entry for criminal prosecution. U.S. protocol prohibits detaining children with their parents because the children are not charged with a crime and the parents are.

...

On Thursday, Sessions cited the Bible in defending his policy, arguing the recent criticisms were not “fair or logical and some are contrary to law.”

“I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the purpose of order,” he said.

2k is 6 weeks isn't sustainable. The whole system is going to break pretty quickly under that strain.

This is pretty obvious. They are literally torturing children and their parents as an extension to morally torture liberals to give in to the bull**** wall demands.

They are literally building concentration camps for them in Texas. Cities of tents where they're going to be kept in the blistering heat of summer.

Yeah I know. The detained people were forced to enter the USA illegally with their children. Also when USA citizens are charged with a crime and have to spend time in the slammer their kids get to stay with them. So fricken unfair.

applying for asylum isn’t illegal

The administration has characterized its policy as being about illegal immigration, though many of the detained migrants — including those in families that are split apart — enter at official border crossings and request asylum, which is not an illegal entry.

Why are you posting? You know that we know more than you. The previous ruling was that accompanied children must be placed in the least restrictive holding possible, as are children of American citizens who break the law aka often that meant with relatives or with their parents themselves, if possible. The Trump administration changed that to say that all accompanied children are now categorized as unaccompanied children must be separated and held in detention, even asylum seekers who are immigrating legally. The Trump administration also refuses to do any tests that would verify the paternity of the parents and children and does not accept the documentation provided to them by the parents or children themselves that would verify them as accompanied and therefore make the administration release them to relatives.

Learn your sh*t because every time you make a fool of yourself and look like the soulless ghoul that many people might think you are.

This is how fascism, totalitarianism and genocide are possible. 42% agree with this bull****.

Gotta give adios a little credit for managing to make a post where he doesn't link to something that completely discredits everything he says.

Lol at me understanding a political cartoon with only one word on it. Where are the five hundred labels?

Seriously though, that single cartoon demonstrates why whathisface is such a hack. The cartoon shown here was very simple but easy to understand and d liveried an extremely strong position.

I also like the a ha, gotcha libs! by detailing the inhumane treatment that American citizens as prisoners get as if liberals wouldn't be like, huh maybe we should make our criminal justice system more humane and try and let prisoners and families have as much contact as possible as well.

On a recent Pod Save The People (this week's or last week's), Deray interviewed two candidates for state's attorney in Baltimore. One of them talked about the value of electronic monitoring and being able to serve out parts of your sentence at home, with your family, maybe even being able to work while you're doing it.

adios would of course say "no no no that's terrible, that's not what I meant at all"
