Remember when AP was a wire service? Those were good times.

I have a question for our resident ER Doctor. If a patient presents with dilated pupils and a lot of sniffing, is the possibility they are taking one of a few different substances something you are actively considering in your assessment?

(This is for Dr. Hobbes not “Dr.” Clovis)

I've genuinely thought about doing some speechwriting but have no clue where to start and I imagine it would be a massive pay cut. I could deal with that for the right situation, but it's not like you can just walk in off the street and get a job writing speeches.
I've thought about it too, and the path seems to be that unless you know someone who can get you in you have to go find a campaign like Beto's and then work for him as a volunteer. That gives you the ability to showcase your stuff and build some chops, and then if he wins you'll get a west wing gig. After that you leave and pretty much take your pick from a variety of high-paying offers.

If he loses, well, back to the drawing board.

High on the differential diagnosis. Displaying paranoid behavior, flight of ideas, and delusions of grandiosity would move the needle further in that direction.

Or just a simple chronic psychiatric problem combined with a cold, I suppose. That would fit, too.

NYT "fact checked" Schumer saying the shutdown hurts millions of Americans:

The NYT wants Trump to get reelected. They present an outward showing of being the leftie, anti-Trump paper. But that reputation can only last if Trump is in power. So they need him to win to retain subscribers.

CNN, MSNBC, WaPo are all the same way. They need Trump in office to keep their high ratings and subscribers.

Nah, they all hate him, they’ve just been successfully bullied.

NYT is also wrong on the direct harm from this. 800k is only federal workers who are going without pay. There are also plenty of federal contractors who are out of a job right now (and will never get back pay).

And suppliers to those contractors.

And the KIDS of all of these people

There's also countless people who are unable to enjoy National Parks and other attractions our tax dollars pay for. There's section 8 housing residents who wont get their rent money. There's longer lines at airports. Etc etc. The list of non-federal employees affected by this is longer than the 800,000 federal employees. NYT is bad at this. AP is bad at this. They're pretty much all bad at this.

Seems pretty spot on to me.

Nah nah, Michelle Wolf nailed it when she said “did you used to date him? because you pretend like you hate him but I think you love him.”

Individual reporters may sincerely hate Trump but their institutions collectively absolutely love, love, LOVE the drama. And shown in their completely non-sensical and farcical editorial decisions such as airing Trump’s propaganda last night after denying Obama’s immigration speech in 2014 for being “too political.” Just blatant, unadulterated bull****.

Good Lord that NYT fact check take is terrible. WaPo needs to award NYT some pinnochios for that one.

Summon the memory of any Trump tweet or statement about "the border patrol agents want me to hold the line, because they want the wall", and then read this article:

Border patrol agent + federal employee union sue Trump administration over shutdown, demanding federal employees get their paychecks

Quote:
The complaint asked that the named plaintiff, Customs and Border Protection officer Albert Vieira, and other similarly classified individuals be paid owed wages.
Quote:
Even so, employees deemed “essential” or “excepted” have been expected to come to work. “Essential” government employees are those — like Vieira — who are “performing emergency work involving the safety of human life or the protection of property.”

The Department of Homeland Security deployed Vieira to the southwest border in November. The transfer was part of an “agencywide initiative to combat illegal immigration,” according to court documents; Vieira is scheduled to remain there until Jan. 13.

Since the shutdown began, Vieira has continued to work six days a week. Like most federal employees, he is scheduled to receive a paycheck (for wages earned between Dec. 23 and Jan. 5) next week. Court documents also allege Vieira worked a 12-hour overtime shift Dec. 22, for which he is owed.

Yeah institutionally these outlets have not been more relevant in ages. The reality is most of the mainstream media outlets were absolutely dying and Trump’s nonsense has absolutely revived them. As entities they absolutely want the madness to continue.

I wonder if any of these 800,000 have other people relying on their income, or are they all single without kids?

The boom in the shot's not that surprising considering they couldn't work the lights in the White House for weeks:
Aides confer in the dark because they cannot figure out how to operate the light switches in the cabinet room. Visitors conclude their meetings and then wander around, testing doorknobs until finding one that leads to an exit. In a darkened, mostly empty West Wing, Mr. Trump’s provocative chief strategist, Stephen K. Bannon, finishes another 16-hour day planning new lines of attack.
I somehow either never heard about this back when it originally happened or blocked it from memory but good God what a bunch of absolute ****ing morons.
