Does anyone ever come out looking good after these response speeches? May as well give it to Pelosi or someone without any higher electoral ambitions.

Rember, one of the ways they caught Manafort for bank fraud was that he couldn't save a fraudulent word document to pdf and wrote an email to someone else to have them do it.

i want ted lieu to be the designated response guy. no one in the dem party should get upset over that because the only upward movement he has is from house -> senate. so he's not really stealing spotlight from anyone. everyone can be calm since he isnt making a power play to jump to the presidency

re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

I think the best strategy is a very brief response (under 2 minutes):

We know that you really don't want to be watching political speeches about total dysfunction on a Tuesday in January just a few months after you finished watching non stop campaign ads, so we'll make this brief.

Almost everything President Trump just said is a lie. Seriously. All of it. The most important facts you should know are that the number of people on the terror watch list apprehended at the southern border in the first half of 2018 was six, not 4,000, and that immigrants are less likely to commit violent crimes than citizens. They actually make us safer.

The president wants a wall, but he couldn't even get it done while his own party controlled the House and Senate, so now he's blaming us and threatening to circumvent the Constitution to do it. That's unacceptable and un-American.

The wall is not needed, would be ineffective, is unwanted by most Americans, and would waste more than 20 billion dollars of taxpayer money. This initial 6 billion he wants is only a fraction of the cost. That's money that could go to toward better healthcare, for example.

We've already passed a clean bill to re-open the government - one the Senate previously passed unanimously. The Republicans in the Senate refuse to take it up in the new session because they're following Trump's orders. This shutdown is nothing more than an ineffective president's temper tantrum that is being enabled by Senate Republicans. So call your Republican Senators and tell them to re-open the government immediately.

These are trying political times in America, but rest assured that the Democratic Party is working hard for all Americans and we want to get back to the business of responsible governing and fighting for better wages and better healthcare. We hope the president will stop this madness and join us in that work.

Thank you, and God Bless America.

re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

Also the odds of effectively delivering a two person response are very low and Pelosi and Schumer are two of the worst candidates to deliver it. I'd prefer someone in the new class of freshman House members who just got into politics in the last few years in response to this madness. They'll help illustrate that the party is in touch with regular Americans because they're the closest thing to regular Americans in Congress. Abigail Spanberger is a name that comes to mind.

Obama would be effective as well, but the media would spend 24 hours discussing whether it was unpresidential to criticize Trump so directly and overtly, and it would give Trump a favorite enemy to attack. Thus it would backfire badly.

I HOnestly think a pop-up video style replay of his speech with a few snarky commentators cracking jokes would be amazing. Like, it doesn’t deserve a serious response, like Chuck and Nancy appear to be doing. Trump is a clown, and so is his administration, so they should be treated as such.

Seriously, why do they keep debating this nonsense on the merits of it? Trump will go and lie and lie and lie in bad faith because he hates foreigners and made a dumb campaign promise. Just call it all out as lies. The example response that cuserounder wrote is perfect.

Oh I'd also add a line about how Trump proudly took responsibility on camera in advance, and how that proves that this isn't a real frozen negotiation but rather a political stunt by a billionaire that's costing millions of Americans their paychecks.

I'd only drop one sentence - the one about immigrants making us safer. It's absolutely true, but just riles up the rubes.

Otherwise, get a job writing speeches for the dems. Good stuff.

Thanks for the positive reactions. Not going to quote them all because I'm driving. Actually wrote that on my cell while driving. (I know, I know...)

I've genuinely thought about doing some speechwriting but have no clue where to start and I imagine it would be a massive pay cut. I could deal with that for the right situation, but it's not like you can just walk in off the street and get a job writing speeches.
