Can asylum seekers legally work while they're waiting for their case? I'm guessing no.

I don't think so, but I would love to give a proposition to Trump where asylum seekers are granted asylum and green cards in exchange for relocation out of his hellish camps and into sanctuary cities. Obviously the legislative process to make this happen is complicated enough to be nigh impossible, but if it were up to just Trump and mayors, it would be such a massive and easy win.

Nah, you're looking at this wrong. theviolator's response is a perfect example of why. Whether or not liberals would welcome immigrants in sanctuary cities is completely irrelevant.

Trump said "hey libs, if you're so open borders, how would you like it if I BROUGHT THE IMMIGRANTS TO YOU?" and it owned the libs, not because of anything based in reality, but because it made MAGA trolls feel good. Trumpkins love that line. The facts involved don't matter at all, the actual liberal response from real people doesn't matter at all, the only thing that matters is that Trump owned the libs and his dumb fans cheered.

I haven't opened the CP thread on this but also I don't need to, I already know what's inside, all the Trump fans love it and none of them care one bit if mayors actually have their arms wide open.

I literally got the "So you're going to host them in your house right? Gotcha libtard" on chiefsplanet on this issue.

I replied: this is such a dumb gotcha. Did your ancestors need someone to house them when they came from wherever?

They're not toddlers. They can find work and find their own lodging. That's what able-bodied adults do.

They can.

Quote:
You cannot apply for permission to work (employment authorization) in the United States at the same time you apply for asylum.
You may apply for employment authorization if:

150 days have passed since you filed your complete asylum application, excluding any delays caused by you (such as a request to reschedule your interview)*AND

No decision has been made on your application
https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/r...-asylum/asylum

It's a sore point of contention for immigration hawks because they see it as something that pulls asylum seekers in. It's probably true in some sense. If you're in a situation that could grant you an asylum case in America, you're probably not in a low employment thriving job market.

Hence,

Quote:
US immigration officials are pushing a proposal to significantly increase the amount of time asylum-seekers must wait to obtain a work permit for legal employment in the US, sources close to the administration said Wednesday.

The proposal by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services officials, included in a not-yet-finalized regulation, would more than double the time individuals who apply for asylum — either affirmatively while already present in the US or after crossing the border and referred to immigration court — become qualified to receive a work permit, from 180 days to 365 days.
And

Quote:
The federal agency, which is responsible for granting or denying immigration benefits to migrants, has also been working on a separate proposal that would*institute a $50 fee*for those who file for asylum after entering the US, sources said.

How cities get rid of their homeless populations is they buy them bus tickets to another city. If the cities didn't want asylum seekers, they can just turn around and bus them to suburbia if they wanted to.

Making it hard for asylum seekers to work effectively makes it impossible to seek asylum. One has to support oneself. The typical asylum seeker is already in a precarious situation in terms of personal economics.

That you fail to see that he conditioning of the "release" on the circumstance of the destination is indicative of its inhuman intent is similarly indicative.

The government exists to seek social welfare. When it actively tries to create problems then something is seriously wrong.

The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

That’s the point.

They want to make it as hard and painful as they can for people to seek asylum.

That’s why they aren’t letting enough people apply at the ports so they come between ports and then turn themselves in once on US soil.

That’s why they want to throw them in cages and pour out their water and not let them work and separate them from their children.

The whole master plan is to make it so horrible that less people will come here from the south.

Accepting the sanctuary cities ideas amounts to accepting the premises of Trump's argument. Once you do that, he's won.

Or during a Q and A town hall style, when the question popped up (and I'd make sure it did obviously)...

"You all may have heard that President Trump was trying to get DHS to 'dump' undocumented immigrants who couldn't be detained into sanctuary cities to 'punish' Democrats and liberals. Well, while South Bend is not a sanctuary city, as a mayor I do know a thing or two about running a city and taking in and resettling immigrants or refugees. I know about growing a city and creating opportunities for long-time residents and newcomers alike...

I know that immigrants make our communities safer, immigrants make our communities stronger, and immigrants add to the fabric of our communities and cultures. They can make the day-to-day experience of living life richer and more fulfilling, and we can do the same for them.

Just as importantly, they're hard workers, determined to build their American Dreams from the ground up... So when this president says he wants to 'dump' immigrants in liberal cities to punish them? Well this mayor would say, 'Thank you, Mr. President... This is a blessing for our city!' And to the immigrants, 'Welcome to America! I just know you're going to live it here...' Or, 'Bienvinidos a los Estados Unidos,' or... (proceed to rattle off some of his many languages).

Because it's not a liberal or a conservative idea to welcome immigrants, it's an American idea... So if the president thinks he's going to "punish" us with immigrants, he's got another think coming, because we will proudly take in the tired and the poor... While they may be his wretched refuse... they're our huddled masses yearning to breathe free!"

Something like that would go viral so quickly, get so much free media, and resonate so much with the base that he'd probably snag 5 points in the polls - which is huge for where he's at... And you could cut it into one hell of an online campaign ad. Picture the style of Bernie's 'America' ad, with Pete's speech cut up with shots of scenery around America, people welcoming immigrants, immigrants opening businesses, highly successful/famous immigrants, etc... Drop some lower third IDs including their name, company they started, number of jobs created, etc...

Plus its the moral thing to do.

Fleeing a hell the US helped create: why Central Americans journey north

Between us messing with many of the governments and the effects of our drug use creating powerful mafias and gangs all over the place we have a moral obligation to help.

Im not sure what you think trump wins here. At best the right would try and use any crime from asylum seekers as a tool but that could be countered with facts and if the trend continues people seeking asylum are the safest of all Americas. If trump is giving dems the keys to let kids out of cages they should do it.

The demarcates dont even need to come up with a motto or symbol which they are not always the best at.

Quote:
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Watched part 1 of Dr Gates’ Reconstruction show on PBS this week. Cannot escape the conclusion that pretty much everything passed with the backing of southern states is illegitimate. Ever. Elections have almost always been stolen in America and continue to be so. Voter ID and computer generated gerrymanders are just the 21st century tools.

We should have let the South leave in 1861. (Although unacceptable froma moral standpoint).

The parallels of the reactions to Obama and to blacks gaining power after the civil war are stark.

I wish the rapture would hurry up and get here, but instead of taking the worthy, only take those that falsely think they are worthy. World would be instantly a better place.

This sanctuary cities has an escape from NY vibe, trump would be fine to begin with to have a city prison or state prison (1st step).
I'm not familiar with sanctuary cities but I assume people in these cities can go in an out and are like every other american city except for that status name?
I assume they are filled with dems and republicans and no wall or fence around the city?
It's like Trumps and his army of fools have an idea but they've reached their limits in how to express it clearly and communicate it.
It seems there is no logic at all, they are functionning solely on their last remaining neuron, it's not even instinct anymore, it's spams:
immigrant!grrrrrr browns! brrrrrrrrrrr libs! waaaaarrrrrg asrflkjhsd flk! aesrdflikj
I don't think there are writers anymore, we are clearly in the monkeys writing the script part.

You guys are vastly overestimating even the most liberal cities' ability/willingness to absorb (or tolerance for) influx of immigrants.

Trump is still an inhuman monster.

California's immigrant population grew 37% in the 1990s and only 8% over the last 10 years. Australia's population grew by almost the same amount as California's over the last 10 years (3.1m vs 3.5m) and Australia has not much more than half the population of California. A big chunk of that was migrants, with Australia accepting about 2.5x as many immigrants in that period as California. Much of that population increase went to Melbourne and Sydney - it depends how you measure it, but the two cities between them probably stacked on nearly 2 million people in the last decade. Melbourne certainly grew by more than a million.

My point is, cities can absolutely take more people than they are. ICE holds an average of about 40,000 people in detention at any one time, you could dump all of that into California and it would cope.

You are vastly overestimating how much a few buses of immigrants per day would have on a typical American city.

I mean, there’s a reason that the border towns aren’t in a state of crisis even though that’s where they’re released right now. The people largely join an existing family or social network, or find some way of scraping by.

A policy of “while your asylum claim is under review, please select one of the following major cities and we’ll provide transportation to it” would be very moral and kind. But since Trump is an inhuman monster and the point is to terrorize these people, instead they’d probably send them 2,000 miles away from the city they choose, under police escort, at 100x cost to the taxpayer.

It's a real thing. Local law enforcement doesn't cooperate with or hand people over to ICE. Chicago literally has a sanctuary ordinance.

My favorite part of the fiendish plot is, thanks to the sanctuary status, the immigrants can overstay their Visa as long as they like even if they aren't granted asylum.
