Pretty sad it took 2 years+ for you to reach these conclusions.
Now imagine about the rest of the population that isn't as smart as you and cannot write/express themselves as well, and you realize nothing will be done to change this.
Also worth noting that discussing socialism with trumpkins is useless, they just hate how the word sounds.
I would say the only thing that has changed is that the probability of everything going to **** has gone up... But it stands to reason that this would change quite significantly from four years out to two years out... Especially as the odds of taking the Senate in 2020 remain pretty low, and as we see just how far the erosion of norms has gone.
Meanwhile, the right wing people I encounter on Facebook (which is like two people from the poker room I used to play in) are openly calling for civil war if a socialist wins in 2020, and telling me that I don't know how serious it's going to get and I better hope I picked the winning side.
I feel like WAAF, so much more than we realize. I guess the standard counter is that people aren't going to resort to violence if their day to day lives stay mostly okay, but I think we're in for an increase in MAGA-bomber type "lone wolf" attacks from right wing terrorists.
I know that whoever wins the nomination will be labeled a socialist, and a lot of these nut jobs will think it is their patriotic duty to try to assassinate that person. I'm terrified one of them will succeed. Also, I think we're probably going to see a major left-wing protest or political rally or convention attacked in the next couple of years, and I hope and pray I'm wrong or that the scale of it isn't nearly what I fear. I worry a little bit about it every time I go to the Women's March or any big public gathering of liberals.
In reality, none of that will probably lead to a civil war, we'll just do the whole thoughts and prayers thing and condemn it and they'll crank down the heated rhetoric for like 24 hours, and Trump or someone else on the right will do the "very fine people" thing, then we'll all go back about our business - except for the ones of us killed/injured.
Then we'll go back to the normal way things work these days in America... When the Democrats have power we'll get incremental half measures that don't accomplish much, then we'll get four to eight years of all out assault on our norms and democracy.
I think 2020 is our last chance to really prevent that, and I don't have a lot of optimism that the Dems won't **** it up one way or another. The odds of getting a presidential candidate willing to truly fight for an HR1-plus type reform, and of having him/her win, and of holding the Senate and the House at the same time is pretty low...
Probably time for me to take a break from all of this, because it certainly isn't healthy for me and there's not a whole lot I can do.
