Used to be. I still do it from time to time but basically only via referrals from former students.

Basically it happens like this: former student tells a friend I am really good at coaching standard tests and some idiot asks me to take the test instead.

Not real Dom.

We've found the liberal equivalent of everyone's aunt and uncle on FB. Just proves how rare it is.

And even then, Dom will feel some modicum of shame and the need to issue some kind of corrective action or apology. Whereas literally half the right-wingers I know just snicker something or yell fake news when their bogus meme is called out - completely undeterred.

The vid is pretty obviously a fake, I don't think anyone (including Dom) thinks that it is real?

I live right next to a high school notorious for cheating, corona Del Mar. Look it up. I wouldnít be surprised if someone I know was peripherally wrapped up in all of this.

I kept my nose really clean while I was a tutor but the opportunity for cheating is pretty nuts and the pressure on these kids to succeed is absurd

Yeah, at highschool level people that ask to cheat are almost exclusively parents of kids at schools like Stuyveysant (100% lock there is going to be ANOTHER huge cheating scandal at that school at some point).

I didnít even see this part -

https://news.yahoo.com/celebs-charge...180302288.html

Lelling said the operation, allegedly run out of a Newport Beach, Calif., college-admissions coaching company, had several parts, including coaching applicants to cheat on SAT and ACT admissions tests and bribing athletic coaches to identify applicants as potential recruits who could be admitted under athletic waivers requiring lower academic standards.

Was definitely corona del mar.

Re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

Issues that will turn millions of people into single-issue voters against you don't typically get passed.

Especially when those millions are some of the most politically active. (service minded + highly educated)

I actually think PSLF is bull**** and government should just pony up and pay competitive salaries if they want to keep talented workers and graduates should be allowed to just work where they want and pay a de-facto tax of 10% (under repayement plans) if they needed a big loan.

But lol at taking PSLF away after it's been instituted. At least do a grandfather clause so that loans given out prior to some date are still eligible for PSLF.

I canít imagine there are many Trump voters who are counting on PSLF, though?

We could forgive every student loan and subsidize higher education going forward for less than what the Iraq war cost.

This scandal is all kinds of amazing. What makes it extra amazing is there are less detectable (and WAY less illegal) ways to achieve the same results.

Things I've seen:
1. Finance your kids' "business". This is super popular for MBA applicants from rich families and picking up with second gen kids in Silicon Valley.
2. Get a de facto consultant for your kid's entries into science fairs.
3. Boarding schools with inflated/flatten curves. (A lot of these schools ration recommendation letters to basically internally sort the students to basically make sure even the worst students would look fine because the best students wouldn't be applying to Duke)
4. Boarding schools in non-English speaking countries with not easily translatable grades. Super high TOEFL scores (well, in a lot of cases, these kids are first language English speakers..., this also has the effect of effectively lowering requirements on SATs)
5. Pay galleries/artist magazines to exhibit/write about kids' amazing artistic powers.
6. Fly kids to basically unattended piano/music instrument of choice competition overseas and call them "Runner Up of International Chopin Festival of Some BS competition in Poland" with 2 competitors.
7. Sending kids to parents' home country for high school so they can use the lower admission requirements for international students and score super high TOEFL to look smart.
8. Trading recommendation letters (well-known alum from Yale writing recommendation letter for a friend's kid in return for a friend's recommendation letter for his own kid's application to Harvard for example)

I could go on. I have been around college/MBA/law school admission circles for a very very long time and I've seen a lot of shady ****. Other than SAT for truly hopeless kids (with some tutoring and just a few months of studying, even kids with only average IQ can get to 1350+ range), you could legally buy your way into perfectly fine college application while basically sending your kids on a tour of the world.

Decent number of doctors out there who may vote R are counting on PSLF to pay off 300k+ balances. Now most of those claimed not to have voted for Trump, but who knows?

Re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

Iíve been heavily invested in that issue since the wife is working towards PSLF and only has about 30 or so payments left. Trumpís 2018 budget also proposed eliminating it but there was a grandfather clause for current borrowers. I havenít read into whether this one does as well or not yet. Hopefully itís DOA in the House.

The ABA has filed lawsuits regarding PSLF in the past and Iíd imagine they would make their voice heard again.

Whether this gets cut or not, actually getting the loans forgiven was always going to be a crapshoot. Itís been well documented how few have been processed to date. Personal example- My wife had an employment certification form that was submitted by a former employer rejected because whoever filled out the form wrote the date slightly off the line where the date/signature line was.
