As a former professional chef, I mostly agree with you, although all meat has imperfections that allow air contact and thus bacteria to potentially get into the uncooked areas. It’s very minuscule though, and a far less likely source of food borne illness than an entirely uncooked food like salad. It doesn’t matter—many doctors still give that advice and it’s also found in books like Pregnancy 411 or What to Expect when you’re Expecting.
I suggest if you feel that strongly about it I suggest you be the one to start that argument with a pregnant woman because I sure as hell am not.
