The US is signatory to a treaty which forbids ballot access laws discriminating on the usual stuff (race, sex etc) but I can't see why laws about tax returns would be a problem.

I did not know that the individual US states have this much discretion when it comes to federal elections.

It will probably end up in court and will be ruled against NJ because of some reasons they come up with. But it's a great idea since if he's not on the ballot, GOP turnout will drop and hurt all their down ballot candidates.

The idea was that if the federal government had control of the electoral process nationwide, that would be a means by which it could subvert democracy and become a tyranny. Thus the states are required to administer elections themselves, even federal elections. There are pros and cons to this idea.

If this gets through the courts prior to 2020 expect to see a slew of states follow suit.

Republicans want to play games and use illegal voting suppression tactics? Time for the Dems to step up and legally balance the playing field.

Feds used to administer elections in the south for obvious reasons, but not since Justice Roberts declared racism over and struck down the Voting Rights Act.

Getting candidates to reveal tax returns and therefore conflicts or potential conflicts is reasonable. Preventing people of color from voting is outrageous. Not seeing a tit for tat here.

Re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

Im not in any way trying to imply they are equivalent. But the dems usual response to the republicans illegally suppressing votes is to be mad, challenge it in court, lose (or in some cases win), and then do nothing to prevent it from happening again.

At least with this, they are fighting back at the ballot box directly. Again, im not saying its a suppression technique, but it is making a reasonable requirement that will keep those who dont follow off the ballot. Im sure ole Donny isnt the only republican who would want to keep his taxes to himself.

Re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

Here are the companies poised to profit from the Trump border wall
Washington’s border-security deal provides $1.375 billion to build about 55 miles of border barriers, setting up government contractors to compete for their piece of that money.

While the level of funding falls short of what President Donald Trump has demanded for his long-promised wall, it’s still a sizable amount that Democrats and Republicans have agreed to spend in two areas of the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.

The bipartisan deal allows for the use of any barrier materials previously used, such as steel slats or levee wall systems. It bars the use of new designs, such as the concrete prototypes commissioned by the Trump administration, which continues to push for an extensive border wall but faces legal and congressional challenges after the president declared a national emergency to build it.

The new 55 miles of barriers in Hidalgo and Starr counties likely will get built by companies with previous experience in this type of work, and these companies range from a privately held Texas firm to publicly traded Israeli contractors, according to experts. The firms have a history of giving money mostly to Republican politicians.

SLSCO, founded by brothers Todd, Billy and Johnny Sullivan, scored a $166.8 million contract for a border-security project in December, as well as a $145 million deal in November.

Montana-based Barnard Construction Co., given its past experience, also could get a chance to build some of the 55 miles of barriers, according to James R. Phelps, a consultant, author and professor who teaches courses on homeland security at universities such as Nova Southeastern in Florida. Barnard in November won a $172 million contract to build 32 miles of replacement wall in Arizona.

SLSCO’s three founders contributed significant amounts to individual Republican candidates’ committees or groups tied to the GOP during the 2018 election cycle, giving about $68,000 in total, according to Federal Election Commission filings. One of the founders, Johnny Sullivan, also donated $2,700 to longtime Texas Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s campaign committee.

Meanwhile, Barnard Construction founder Tim Barnard contributed about $82,000 to individual Republican candidates’ committees or groups tied to the GOP during the last cycle, according to FEC filings. He also gave $6,000 to three trade groups’ political action committees.

Israel-based Magal Security Systems, which provides “perimeter intrusion detection systems,” also might get involved. “Magal Security has built much of Israel’s Gaza wall and has been mentioned as a possible contractor for the U.S. wall,” the University of Hawai‘i’s Jones said. The company, listed in Israel and the U.S., has talked up building a “smart” fence along the U.S.-Mexico border, and its shares rallied after Trump’s election but have since pulled back.

Bernstein Research in 2016 predicted that Cemex CX, a big seller of cement, concrete and other materials, was best positioned to benefit from Trump’s proposed wall. Phelps, however, was downbeat on the Mexican heavyweight’s prospects when it comes to the $1.375 billion promised for new barriers.

The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, a trade group whose leadership includes executives from U.S. Concrete, Vulcan, Martin Marietta and Cemex, contributed about $433,000 to federal candidates or party committees during the 2018 election cycle, with Republicans receiving 89% of the money.

Being arrested also leads to going "down for years" approximately never as well.

The people going to prison are dealers, not kids with dime bags.

Edit: Will leave original text above in tact, but if it wasn't clear, my point is that there are FAR more arrests than jail sentences. Having the word "never" in there is going to lead to some LOL INSOs and I want those people (goofy) who are working on posts not to feel as if they wasted their time.

You are full of ****.

There are so many people locked up because of trivial issues, the majority of them minorities. I used to see it all the time, young black kid on probation for some other petty felony charge they had to plea to, (or end being maxed out if they took it to trial and lost), ends up picked up for a misdemeanor pot charge and gets sentenced to years for the violation. It happens every single day.

Edit:
I remember one case specifically, it's one of many reasons I stopped practicing criminal law. A 22 year old kid, on felony probation for habitual DWLS, he had 3 Driving While Licence Suspended convictions within a 5 year span, was arrested for possession less than 20 grams of cannabis. The charge ended up getting thrown out, because the pot wasn't his and wasn't even on him, but the violation sent the guy to prison for 36 months. You don't even have to be convicted to violate, just being arrested or even having contact with police in some cases will do it in Florida. I know, lolFlorida.

If you're a billionaire, you ship the 14 year olds directly to your apartment like Epstein, cops are cool with that. Big fail on getting a rub and tug at a public place.

The other thing this report doesn't get into is how many of those "minute amount" felony convictions were due to a stronger charge being reduced to limit their time behind bars.

We aren't throwing potheads caught with a joint in prison. It's simply not done.
