The Cummings report notes that one of the power plant manufacturers that could benefit from a nuclear deal, Westinghouse Electric, is a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management, the company that provided financial relief to the family of Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and adviser. Brookfield Asset Management took a 99-year lease on the family’s deeply indebted New York City property at 666 Fifth Avenue.

This is not the first time that people giving money to Kushner have been tied to foreign policy influence. Should be like the biggest scandal in at least a decade but will be overlooked or forgotten by end of the day, unbelievable.

Re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

Polling on the national emergy trails Trump support

Quote:
A new NPR-PBS-Marist College poll was launched when Trump declared his national emergency four days ago. And the verdict isn’t a good one: The poll shows 61 percent of registered voters disapprove of Trump’s national emergency declaration, vs. 36 percent who approve of it.

The opposition spans nearly every demographic group. Of the more than 40 groups broken out by the poll, only Republicans (both men and women), Trump supporters, white evangelicals and rural voters don’t see opposition cresting 50 percent. (Rural voters, though, are split 47-47 — despite favoring Trump 61-34 in the 2016 election.)

Well Clovis8 must not be all that sure about his Trump prostignations vis a vis Kissinger:

Kissinger was pure evil but his evil didn’t attack the very foundations of global democracy.

I do see him ****ting all over the actual transfer of power in whatever way he can but in childish ways. Refusing to speak to the incoming POTUS to pass along any info, destroying any piece of paperwork he legally can (and then some), firing everyone he can at all levels like two days before inauguration, etc. Probably steal a painting or two from the WH on his way out too.
So long as he's in office, he can't be criminally charged. I expect him to do everything possible to stay in office for his entire life. I wouldn't be surprised to see him call a national emergency over voter fraud, delaying elections until we could "figure out what the hell is going on".

No shock. It's been made clear that CNN secretly wants Trump to get a second term so their ratings continue to stay high.

I dunno. The amount of stuff that's going to be exposed/come out/be admitted to by people flipping to avoid prision the minute he's waddles off into the sunset is going to keep ratings high for years. I think CNN wins either way.

Re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

To GOP lawmakers, Trump is the most accessible president they can remember

As in: he is always available to talk on the phone because he doesn't actually do any work

Quote:
One surprise call came from Air Force One as President Trump was leaving Iraq, startling Sen. James M. Inhofe (R) as he was chopping wood back home in rural Oklahoma with his grandson. When Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) recently stepped off a plane, a White House voice mail was waiting for him, saying Trump was “available for the rest of the evening” for another round of their regular phone conversations.
Quote:
“I never called President Bush or President Obama,” said Barrasso, who has served in the Senate since 2007. “I just feel comfort in calling President Trump. He calls me regularly to talk about issues. He’s always helpful for both of us.”

Longtime senators who have served through multiple administrations say they have never seen a president so easily accessible to lawmakers. The calls are part of what occupies the wide swaths of “executive time” on Trump’s schedule — an unstructured stretch of the day he uses to call allies and hold meetings that are otherwise not publicly announced.
Quote:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — whom Trump has called while the Kentucky Republican was attending a Nationals baseball game — is among the most frequent of the president’s phone partners. But Trump also speaks often with Sens. David Perdue (R-Ga.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) and Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), according to people familiar with the conversations.

Rep. Mark Meadows (N.C.), who is chairman of the House Republicans’ conservative faction and was once considered for White House chief of staff, also chats several times per week with Trump, mostly in impromptu calls.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said one GOP senator who occasionally calls Trump, chuckling.
Quote:
Lawmakers rarely have to wait for Trump to return their calls — if they have to wait at all.

“The vast majority, he just picks up,”
said another GOP senator, who regularly calls Trump and spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations. “If he doesn’t . . . he’ll return them within an hour.”

Re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/19/u...tigations.html

Quote:
Mr. Trump called Matthew G. Whitaker, his newly installed attorney general, with a question. He asked whether Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York and a Trump ally, could be put in charge of the widening investigation, according to several American officials with direct knowledge of the call.

Mr. Whitaker, who had privately told associates that part of his role at the Justice Department was to “jump on a grenade” for the president, knew he could not put Mr. Berman in charge, since Mr. Berman had already recused himself from the investigation. The president soon soured on Mr. Whitaker, as he often does with his aides, and complained about his inability to pull levers at the Justice Department that could make the president’s many legal problems go away.

Quote:
Mr. Whitaker, who earlier this month told a congressional committee that Mr. Trump had never pressured him over the various investigations, is now under scrutiny by House Democrats for possible perjury.

It's not that, it's that these people in the media entertainment/infotainment biz are all chummy. Remember Trump and Mika used to friends, SNL had no problem letting Trump host the show, Colbert let Sean Spicer host the Emmys after he left the White House, etc. These guys love to act like they're #Resistance now, but for decades they never had any problem with him and his bigotry. It's a lock that we'll see various Trump toadies gets jobs within the media.

Re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

I don't think we should read too much into the Sarah Isgur hiring. If she has no experience in TV news, I can't imagine her role is going to be very big. There's too much at stake for CNN to put someone without experience in a very important role. She may bring something to the table in terms of having Republican sources, but there's no way that she'll be dictating coverage. She doesn't know enough about the biz to do that. The story doesn't indicate that she is replacing anyone, so I would write this off as not a big deal.

SCJ Uncle Tom, err I mean Clarence Thomas, calls for reconsideration of landmark libel case

https://us.cnn.com/2019/02/19/politi...sby/index.html

Quote:
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on Tuesday called for reconsideration of a landmark First Amendment precedent, criticizing the 1964 decision that the Constitution creates a higher barrier for public figures to claim libel.
Quote:
His position echoes complaints of President Donald Trump, who has called for libel laws to be reconsidered in light of news stories about him.

From the article it sounds like she'll be doing exactly that:

Isgur, who served as the Justice Department’s leading spokeswoman under Attorney General Jeff Sessions, is joining the network as a political editor next month, where she will coordinate political coverage for the 2020 campaign.

Nah, just Thomas. Not a surprise at all considering his history. I'd guess he'll go down as the most useless justice of all time. You could basically replace him with a stuffed owl with a default vote as far to the right as possible, and you'd have the same results.

I'd be interested in Simplitucus's take, though.....

Re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

Creepy Clarence is an ORIGINALIST and the Framers never said in the First Amendment that celebs had to overcome a higher barrier to claim libel.

OK, I guess he's right about that.

In fact, he's SO right that...the Framers didn't bother to mention libel at all. So if Creepy Clarence really cares about ORIGINALISM he should be pissing on libel law altogether, not complaining about one particular SCOTUS decision.

fwiw Hugo Black's thoughts on the subject:

Quote:
“The only sure way to protect speech and press against these threats is to recognize that libel laws are abridgments of speech and press and therefore are barred in both federal and state courts by the First and Fourteenth Amendments. I repeat what I said in the New York Times case that ‘An unconditional right to say what one pleases about public affairs is what I consider to be the minimum guarantee of the First Amendment.’ “
So yeah, the cynic/realist in me thinks Creepy Clarence doesn't give a squirt of piss about ORIGINALISM, he's just stanning for Trump.
