re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

I feel dumb asking but does Coulter have any basis for this landmine theory of the budget deal? I mean I know Trump was supposedly wary of potential landmines and it would be great if true, but I assumed it was just paranoid fantasy.

Pedophilia is almost certainly more prevalent among the 1% than other income classes. I have no evidence to back this except for a billionaire flying other billionaires on a private jet to his island so they could **** underage girls without being interrupted.

All the national emergency talk made me (and apparently this thread) miss out on the fact that we have a new Attorney General.

Party line vote to confirm except that Rand Paul voted no and Manchin (of course), Doug Jones (dude, republicans aren't ever going to like you. stop it) and Kyrsten Sinema (what the ****) voted yes.

Sinema's vote is not all that surprising. She's a centrist with no well-defined ideology.

The Pres. would have to use military funds for a while and then would have to provide detailed info about the emergency for any additional funding after 120 days or something.

It's such a bad idea that I'm surprised Trump didn't do it.

Sorry to pick on you lawyer types but... told you guys Trump wasn't bluffing about the emergency.

Trump doesn't care about whether or not this will work from a legal perspective. He doesn't care about precedent. He only cares about how Fox News viewers will see it, which is STRONG MAN TRUMP STICKS IT TO THE BROWNS. Almost every decision he makes is to feed his narcissism, and watching fawning coverage of himself on Fox is perfect for that.

re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

I am a lawyer type and I never thought Trump knew or cared about the implications of declaring national emergency. It’s a big part of why conceding anything is dumb. He’ll just keep flailing around until he’s convinced he really can’t get anymore. And any concession to people like him suggests you’re not quite at your bottom line yet.

Meanwhile, McConnel’s just like “I don’t want anything to do with this **** so let me recommend something that makes sure Trump gets all the blame for the incoming ****storm.”

Meanwhile, I bet Trump actually enjoys the idea that he has unchecked powers to raid some "pots of money."

yeah, which is why trump is going to couple it with the emergency declaration. most of these idiots will be appeased (or at least distracted) when they find out daddy is taking money from puerto rico to pay for the wall.

re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

I've never thought McConnell was dumb (evil and a turd, sure) - but I can't believe he's willing to go along with Trump on the Emergency thing. I wonder if a) he's already counted the Senate votes and thinks they'll shut it down (unlikely) or b) if he assumes (and has somehow been assured) that the courts will strike down the Emergency decree.

Which would probably be the optimal outcome as far as he would be concerned, I'd guess.
Dummy can flail around with the wall crap for a few months, have the courts tell him "LOL, nah" - by which time he's on the way out of office.

It just seems odd that McConnell would toss away so much power for something he has repeatedly said is a bad idea.

Or something.

Politically it still doesn't make sense. The polls show that people disapprove of a national emergency ~65-33. There is no good reason to declare your support for something that is incredibly unpopular AND has a very good chance to not even happen. My only thought is that in that last minute convo with Trump to convince him to sign the deal, Trump told him he would but only if McConnell publicly endorses a national emergency. And a Happy Meal. With a GOOD toy.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, told reporters there were two hours of phone calls between McConnell and the White House before there were assurances that Trump would sign. In a surprising development, McConnell said he would support Trump’s emergency declaration, a turnabout for the Kentucky Republican, who like many lawmakers had opposed such action.
McConnell is an amoral worm who will do anything which is politically expedient. Trump was evidently threatening to shut the government down again if he didn't get his emergency, supported by McConnell. McConnell's options there are:

1) Allow the government to get shut down again
2) Go to war with Trump (teaming up with Dems for a spending bill, overriding vetoes, etc)
3) Support the emergency

Option 3 isn't GOOD or anything, but obviously McConnell calculated, correctly imo, that it was less politically damaging to the GOP and to him personally than options 1 or 2.

@RandPaul
I, too, want stronger border security, including a wall in some areas. But how we do things matters. Over 1,000 pages dropped in the middle of the night and extraconstitutional executive actions are wrong, no matter which party does them

Does it really matter if it is never built? Trump is already saying that the wall is being built and they've made tremendous progress.
