Would that be enough to let him have his stupid wall?
No. My feeling is that they also should insist on something way past just immigration issues. Something like comprehensive gun control and the reinstatement of Dodd/Frank.

Be great to say, "we offered Trump the wall in exchange for protecting your children from gun violence and protecting your savings from predatory financial institutions. He said no to both of them."

If my wiki quote is misleading it's my fault because I didn't include the sentences before it:

During Giuliani's administration, crime rates dropped in New York City.[76] The extent to which Giuliani deserves the credit is disputed.[79] Crime rates in New York City had started to drop in 1991 under previous mayor David Dinkins, three years before Giuliani took office.
There was a lot of writing about who deserved credit for saving NYC when he ran for president in 2008. I remember reading an extensive piece that I'll never find now but here is one short sample from the time:

For the first time in decades, more manufacturing jobs are returning to the United States than are going offshore. However, about 4 million manufacturing jobs have still been lost to offshoring over the last decades, based on the $500 billion U.S. trade deficit. The Reshoring Initiative concludes that about 25 percent of these jobs are reshorable at current levels of U.S. competitiveness. The survey will provide insight into the mix of policy changes needed to reshore the other 75 percent.

Yeah if you look at the election thread I posted in there back in 2016 about how the US was going to take over the #1 spot in manufacturing output by 2020, and that was before Trump was even in contention. The only thing noteworthy Trump as done with respect to that is to slow down the recovery by creating more uncertainty about the US as a place to do business.

Of course, it's also worth noting that even though the factories are going to come back, the jobs that they used to provide won't be coming with them, mainly thanks to automation. The US will actually start shedding even more jobs to automation in the next decade as driverless cars and trucks start becoming more and more mainstream. Things will get worse before they get better in the labor market.

Jeez, I thought this was going to be an Onion link for sure, and I was going to laugh at how great it was, but now I'm just sad instead.

re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

White House senior administration official tells the media that Trump will deliver the State of the Union as scheduled on January 29 at the U.S. Capitol, despite being uninvited.

Sources also telling MSNBC that they are preparing multiple versions of the State of the Union, including a version for a delivery at a rally.

Edited to add: I don't have a link, I just saw it on TV.

Trump shows up and the doors are locked/the lights are off? The show goes on without the Dems and their seats are empty/occupied by unpaid Fed workers?

What it is about manufacturing jobs that conservatives seem to hold in particularly high regard? Based on how often they talk about manufacturing jobs, it seems conservatives think they're somehow better than any other way people exchange hours for dollars.

Anecdotal, but I’m not seeing a lot of pushback from the MAGA crowd in terms of trump bearing responsibility for the shutdown. I guess in their eyes shutting down the government truly is a winning issue? This was a Facebook conversation with a deplorable…

They are in high demand among the Trump wing of the party - white males without a college degree. A lot of them have no interest in either retraining or relocating.

McConnell could invite trump to give it in the senate chamber. Obviously Trump wants to make it a fight with Pelosi though.

Um, so Trump’s actual proposal is a sham after the media gave him the exact PR he wanted all weekend. Only a limited concession on DREAMERs and makes restrictive changes to immigration laws that he didn’t mention in his speech:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opini...?noredirect=on

I don’t watch them anymore, but my wife will flip on Jake Tapper and other “both sides” idiots “raised by wolves” as we say on this board. From what I saw, it was clear the media was singing the exact “both sides” song Trump wanted, sure Trump is the stubborn one, but can’t Ds meet him halfway to end the suffering?

Deplorables will LOVE the idea of just showing up and doing the SOTU regardless. Not sure the best way to respond but Nancy cannot let that happen.

On that note, get ready for SCOTUS to gut gun restrictions even more:

SCOTUS agrees to take case about NYC gun transport ban

Quote:
New York’s law is not replicated elsewhere: It permits transporting handguns only to firing ranges within the city. Those who challenged the law have a licenses to keep a handgun at their homes. Petitioners included those who want to take their guns to firing ranges or competitions outside the city, and one who wanted to take the gun to his second home upstate.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit ruled for the city. It said petitioners had not shown there was inadequate access to one of the seven firing ranges in the city, that petitioners could not rent a firearm if they wanted to go to a range elsewhere, or that the upstate homeowner could not get a permit to keep a second handgun there.
Lock of the century to be 5-4 against NYC

Man, the Overton window is strong when it comes to guns.

Heller was only ~ten years ago (thanks, 5-4 conservative SCOTUS!) yet in 2019 the idea that you can regulate anything about guns seems like a distant fantasy, even to some liberals.

I think he’s talking about more manufacturing jobs domestic increase than jobs added to outsourcing overseas, not about just more manufacturing jobs than the prior year.
