- Mueller issued the statement because he doesn't want **** to get serious yet for fear of the investigation getting shut down or house dems acting too soon or whatever.

That said, it's interesting to me that Buzzfeed gave the story to SCO before it ran and they had no comment until today. Maybe that's a standard policy or something, I dunno. Or maybe they wanted it to run for some reason, possibly to track leakers?

The non denials by Trump's team are also weird in light of this, although who knows how much the spokespeople actually talk with Trump about details like this. Maybe they had no idea and were just being overly careful.
This is exactly what happened. As soon as i read that story I immediately thought “SDNY.” Mueller’s team doesn’t leak and somebody ****ed up some details here. Mueller denied it because **** was getting real (impeachment talk) based on a faulty story that he knew was faulty.

The other problem i had with the story when i read it was that it sort of implied that they had emails and texts from Trump showing that he directed Cohen, and honestly, I don’t think he knows how to email or text. He probably does everything in person or over the phone.

Very possible. Watergate nerds may remember that one bit where Woodward & Berstein ****ed up a minor detail in their reporting, which gave the Nixon admin ammo to hammer away at them. In the movie, this was the "I'll count to ten and you hang up" bit.

Possibly this was the first time something out-and-out wrong was published and they want to get the record straight. If you're Muller, you do have a public duty to make sure people aren't misinformed about your investigation.

ahaha, 100% this. All of them know full well Trump's a crook, so they by default assumed the story was completely accurate.

The Dossier itself most had when Buzzfeed published it, they just didn't want to run the story since they couldn't verify a lot of it at the time. Buzzfeed gives no ****s.

I was just recalling the scene in All the President's Men with Deep Throat when he's pissed at Woodward, "You shoot too high and miss, then everybody feels more secure."

In my mind, it's certain Trump directed Cohen to lie, one way or another. If there isn't a document then too bad for the good guys but them's the breaks.

Isn't Cohen the one who claimed to record some conversations? That was my hope here.

Yeah, but the story referenced emails and text messages, not recordings.

Thread title change?

I guess jman had a lapse of judgment, but ultimately came to his senses.

Yeah, whatever, our forum can die with dignity. In my defense I’m currently recovering from surgery and a bit loopy.

You made people feel sorry for Haldeman! What a great movie/book. I hope the movie version of the Trump fiasco is as good.

I suspect that Mueller wanted to keep all of this tight and under wraps to be more effectively used in the future. Quite frankly, it's impressive that this is the only notable leak there has been since his investigation started.

He's gotta be pissed about this.

So Mueller probably doesn't have the receipts, but Trump and co obviously weren't sure yesterday if he had them or not.

So Trump and McConnell offer daca or something tomorrow? And then Coulter and Rush freak out again?

Or does he just go with, 'I will reopen the government in exchange for my wall monies... I don't understand why the democrats won't agree. I'm giving them what they want. I'm offering to reopen the government.'

It inspired a lot of people to go into journalism, including a friend who just took a buyout from her editor job. She was probably just in love with Redford at the beginning. Anyway, it worked out for her. Most others couldn't say the same, I'm afraid. A new generation will be inspired by what we're seeing now, and they'll have their heroes too.

I think your zealotry in Mason's threat thread was excellent and welcome. I think editing existing material is a bridge too far. We aren't going to gaslight an admin into thinking that this is a center-right forum where anti-Semitism isn't welcome but the rest of Trumpism is a first class citizen. He has a memory, and he has the software logs incl. time stamps if he cares. If he wants to squash liberal dunks on conservatives in toto, we should go down with dignity. If he just wants to color the tone a bit, we can adapt.

To add for Jake a bit about the part he didn't comment on, it's fairly common for journalists to ask for a comment from relevant parties even if they are certain that their response will be "no comment" just so that they can put "so and so had no comment" in the story rather than have to say nothing and look derelict in their duties to talk to relevant parties.

thank you wookie and jman for doing all you can to speak calmly and bring reason to the situation. I honestly could not have coped with the last 2 years if not for this forum and the posts in it. After the inauguration I went into a depression spiral that i'm pretty sure was nearly 100% due to all this craziness. It's my most reliable source of news and provides me with relief in an age where reliable news and relief is super exhausting to come by.

"Michael, I hope you can find a way to tell congress I had no dealings with this Moscow project."
