I wonder if Trump will remember that the reason he's pulling the troops out is because he defeated ISIS or if he'll say that he's pulling them so no more have to die in Syria.

Pelosi is requesting Trump delay the SOTU until the government shut down is over or give it in writing, old school style.

**** that, make him explain how the state of the Union is strong in the middle of the longest shutdown ever. The optics of him whining about a wall Americans don’t want us going to be terrible. Dem response should just be “He said Mexico would pay for it *mic drop*”

Apparently Pelosi can deny Trump the use of the House for the SOTU address. He could probably still give it in the senate or somewhere else though. It wouldn't surprise me if he goes to Alabama and gives it at one of his MAGA rallies and then Sean Hannity will be there for the post-speech wrapup interview.

It’s a classic Pelosi power move to shut him out f the House but I think it’s a bad play, just makes the Dems look petty.

re: The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: State of Emergency

I don't mind the maneuver. Trump absolutely does not want to be told what to do, especially by a woman. He also loves to get up in front of people and look important, even though he's actually just ranting like a senile grandpa. Now either has to do what Pelosi told him to do, or go up and make a fool of himself (again).

Edit for new posts: I wouldn't block him from using the House though.

I don't think it counts as being delivered if the people you are delivering it to aren't there. He could certainly deliver it in writing and then demand air time to read it to the nation from the oval office. The lack of applause breaks would make it go much faster...

It's a fair point though and SOTU probably takes a ****load of extra work from people who aren't getting paid. The letter may be a bit overdramatic though.

No can hold him to that standard. He'd use it to blame Democrats, talk about illegal immigrant killers, and list the accomplishments he's done. Sure they'd be some that would complain about norms but that doesn't matter

I think it's moreso because I'm one of the few dissidents of the echo chamber that haven't completely abandoned the forum. I can understand that it's not as fun to rip on people who never know you're doing it. At that point you're just typing mean things into a computer for no particular audience, and that's just sad.

No, that was more of a reference on the overall breadth of nature than a A -> B link, but there was definitely some cringe in that thread. I still fall on the creationist side, but 2008 Inso0 was definitely a different person. Color me a little bit embarrassed, for sure.

Asking him to not give the SOTUA is exactly what I'd do if I was a woman and wanted him to give the SOTUA.

Heís gonna do that regardless, better to have him give the speech now that the country is completely dysfunctional and trash is piling up in our national parks rather than later when the country is up and running. Dems cannot project the image that theyíre being difficult just to stick it to Trump, they need to look like the adults in the room.

I searched for "Darwinist" because it seemed like the most likely word that would bring up the exact post BOIDS quoted, not sure how he found the post originally.

Love the move by Nancy to stop Trump from having a proper SOTU.

Of course, Trump will reopen the government for January 20th, give the SOTU and shut it down immediately afterwards. Or he'll give it at a rally in Who-the-****-cares, Mississippi. Or sit in The Oval Office and have himself aired live on national TV reading a teleprompter to a camera. Hell he might prefer the other options over a traditional address. Better for his ego to not get booed relentlessly by the majority of Congress for over an hour.

They donít look like they are being difficult, though. Lack of security is a legitimate concern. Trump loves the attention he will get from giving the SOTU, so there is no way he wants to cancel or postpone it, so heís probably going to do something stupid in response to this. I think itís a decent play.

How do you bridge the gap? With some fantasy story about how they are just biding their time, waiting for the opportune moment to step in and take a brave stand. I mean, even in your friend's telling, the shutdown was the "last straw," but somehow they are still waiting on additional straws to land before it's time to act. In the real world, the time to act was long, long ago.

They don't need to tell themselves that they are doing it for a greater good. Some of them may think that but most likely not all of them.
I didnít interpret what this person was saying to mean that the senators were motivated by some desire to do the right thing or be some kind of hero-patriot agains a threat to our country. He explicitly said they donít care about the shutdown because itís not seriously affecting them, in some I stances it is taking attention away from their favored issues and allowing them to operate in relative peace. I interpreted last straw to mean that they had given up the notion that Trump was a reliable political ally. The guy I was speaking with even mentioned an anecdote that Nixon thought he had the support of Republicans in Congress, but was surprised when he was informed that he didnít have the votes in support of some resolution, he resigned the next day, supposedly. I think the turn will be swift. Naturally you would expect these people to take the line that they are being patriots and putting the country over party politics, but we all know that will be BS.

I'd think he'd prefer to do it in front of Congress vs. in the Oval Office. I can imagine him parading a bunch of special guests in attendance (e.g., families impacted by immigrant crime) and an Oval address gives the rebuttal address an almost equal footing in terms of stature.
