The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: Harm to Ongoing Matter The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: Harm to Ongoing Matter

I've got a bad feeling about this whole shutdown. I think things may get bad enough that DEMs are going to lose in a Judgement of Solomon type situation. Basically, Trumps gonna be like, "Ok, let's cut the baby in half" and DEMs will be in the position where the either give into Trump or force a lot of people to suffer a lot of misery.

Trump's advantage is that he literally doesn't give a **** about anyone other than himself and a few members of his family. Everyone else is expendable.

Nope. Trump prolonging the shutdown means gaining impeachment votes within his party in the Senate. Mueller report will come out in a few weeks and Trump will be gone by March. Don jr already knows he's going to prison.

Can I get an amen?

I am worried too just because I think Pelosi and Schumer are weaker than the Repubs but there are a few important differences.

First, clearly if this works then Trump can just do it again for any other policy he wants. In king Solomon situation there wasn't another pile of babies that are next on the block to be cut in half, and this should change the moral calculus.

Second, Trump can be bypassed by congress. Vetoes can be overridden, and when enough constituents are impacted republican Senators will come around. So really they are negotiating with McConnell and the senators keeping him in power as majority leader.

This is where the media is really failing by framing this as a congressional Democrats against Trump impasse when it is not really that. They should be finding a way to get in front of a camera at every opportunity and changethe narrative.

In terms of the actual mechanics it's more McConnell's shutdown than even Trump's.

I know the polling. Just stating in my world the apoliticals/above-it-allers are starting to pull the “both sides are to blame” and “Democrats need to come to the table” ****.

One quick thing about McConnell. In a lot of these polls you’ll see Trump gets majority blame, then Democrats about 20% behind, followed by generic Republicans getting a very small minority of blame. I think Republicans and Trump should have parity blame.

It’s crazy that lacking basic knowledge civics, such as overriding Presidential vetos, escapes the general public. I bet a damn near 50-60% of this country believes we’re locked in this situation until Trump or the Democrats cave when in reality Mitch could allow a vote and override his veto. Is there anyway to go past Mitch (similar to discharge petition in the House) if enough Senators agree or does one POS really have this much power to ravage hundreds of thousands of lives? If there isn’t this needs to change ASAP.

I wish a Senator from a safe blue state would kick his ass on the Senate floor. Bob Menendez perhaps could atone for his corruption?

If there is enough for veto, McConnel will take credit for resolving the crisis. Once it gets close to that point he’ll be there to extract some advantage.

He’s happy to use Trump as scarecrow and scapegoat. Jared is dreaming if he thinks McConnel is going to offer up GOP sacred cows for some pointless wall.

The Dems should be running not stop ads with Trump saying he was proud to own the shutdown. (Maybe they are? I don't watch much TV and only exposure to social media is what I see on this site.)

Trump’s app rating on 538 tracker is also slowly but surely going down the longer this goes on. Down to 40.6 on 538, was close to like 43 a month or so ago.

Can some of the high profile Dems please start tweeting back at this psycho? Start calling him Demented Donald, I think that's a nickname that would stick.

Spoiler:
It's funny because Lin has done more for Puerto Rico since the hurricane than the Trump administration has. All the profit from this 3 week run is going back to the island.

Yeah, I agree there are important differences in this case. I just hope they're enough to get the right result. They should be, but my faith in Chuck and Nancy is about where yours is at.
