Just tear it down and build a public school or an art museum. Jesus's time is over, and it was a disaster.

Either bad joke or speaking like a true american?

I mean, say what you want about the Catholic Church, but Notre Dame is an all time great artistic achievement of humanity.

Religion is the opiate of the people. I wouldn't have torn it down, but if somebody decided to set it on fire I wouldn't put it out

My kid just did a report on Stevie Wonder. Dude worked for 15 years, putting his career aside for part of it, to try to get MLK Day to be a national holiday. President Obama eventually awarded him the Medal of Freedom partly because of that.

Trump is giving the Medal of Freedom to his golf buddy.

Think about how much water weighs, I don’t think it lands like a gentle shower.

Ya, you'd probably just end up demolishing the building instead of putting the fire out.

So do you destroy the Pantheon too?

This is in the ballpark of the Taliban blowing up Buddhist statues imo.

It's a beautiful iconic building and it means everything to Parisians.

Or maybe higher up, I’m basing this on that forest fire movie with John Goodman in it.

The Pantheon and the Buddhist statues were one of a kind, you can't go a kilometer in France without bumping into a beautiful old church.

Notre Dame is pretty cool in its own right.

Parisians will survive its destruction. I think you’ll be surprised by how little it means to people.

Nobody today believes the gods worshipped in the pantheon are real so there’s no point in destroying it or Egyptian relics or what have you from lost civilizations. Religion is an anchor around humanity’s neck (with the exception of satanism, which is objectively cool af)

During the French Revolution, a group of good guys tried to dechristianize France and replace the church with a "cult of reason":
In ceremonies devised and organised by Chaumette, churches across France were transformed into modern Temples of Reason. The largest ceremony of all was at the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. The Christian altar was dismantled and an altar to Liberty was installed and the inscription "To Philosophy" was carved in stone over the cathedral's doors. Festive girls in white Roman dress and tricolor sashes milled around a costumed Goddess of Reason who "impersonated Liberty". A flame burned on the altar which was symbolic of truth. To avoid statuary and idolatry, the Goddess figures were portrayed by living women, and in Paris the role was played by Momoro's own wife Sophie, who is said to have dressed "provocatively" and, according to Thomas Carlyle, "made one of the best Goddesses of Reason; though her teeth were a little defective."
It was a really good idea and worth trying again

I’m an atheist

ND is f amazing

To think it was built when it was built. It’s astounding.

Also it took not decades to build but centuries.

The main parallel in our lifetime is the church in Barcelona. LSF

I feel like this should go without saying, but the destruction of irreplaceable, priceless architecture and artifacts from human history is a bad thing. The idea that it's somehow ok because the current caretaker holds some views that don't align with some current political ideology you hold is pretty ****ed up, not far removed from the anti-environmental crowd shrugging their shoulders at the permanent loss of millions of species because saving them might cause a dip in this quarter's stock returns. Christianity, for all its problems, is not going to fall because a church burns down, but humanity will be worse off for losing that piece of our history.

Eh, lots of athletes have gotten it.

Like him or not, Tiger did break some barriers in golf and is one of most influential athletes of all time.

At least Tiger is still alive...
