Still, this is a very bold move by him and it really only has political downsides. I'm sure people are firing up a recall effort right now. It could be that the balance is shifting and a referendum would turn against it, but Newsom is definitely leading here and not just following.
If When Newsom runs for President I won't forget this. It's not just about the DP. He has principles and he's acting on them.
This maybe should go in the "Who will run..." thread, but Jay Inslee did basically this in early 2014:
Executions Are Suspended by Governor in Washington
Quote:
Citing “problems that exist in our capital punishment system,” Mr. Inslee, a Democrat, said he would issue a reprieve in any death penalty case that crossed his desk, though he would not let any death row prisoners go free. A future governor could reverse this action, he noted, and order an execution to be carried out.
The Washington Supreme Court ended the death penalty in the state late last year:
Washington state ends ‘racially biased’ death penalty
Quote:
“The death penalty is unequally applied — sometimes by where the crime took place, or the county of residence, or the available budgetary resources at any given point in time, or the race of the defendant,” Chief Justice Mary Fairhurst wrote in the lead opinion.
Next step is for our legislature to get rid of the death penalty altogether. A bill has passed the state Senate, just need the state House, which has a comfortable Dem majority, to approve and it's done.
