Using emergency powers to override democracy is a horrible precedent to set no matter what's being done. It might actually be the worst thing Trump ever does if he does do it. An indefinite state of emergency is an autocracy and doubles down on one of the worst mistakes the American government has ever made: putting too much power in the hands of a single office.
