Problem is that it's too easy to recant on that promise. After all, Trump is not known as a guy keen on keeping promises.
Another issue is that it will set precedent for future deals. Providing money for a wall is a concession that Trump is correct about there being a border crisis. It's also a subtle approval of racism against immigrants by the Dems even if they get DACA in return.
On top of that, it gives Republicans more leverage in future deals. This isn't just a one time thing. The wall will be a constant issue that the Republicans will use to hammer the Democrats in future elections. No matter how much the Dems acquiesce, it will never be enough. It will never be built even if they got $1 trillion for it because it's more valuable as an election-winning weapon than a physical item.

They view as him telling the Democrats to go **** themselves.
The only thing that brings me some sort of joy is that he is likely the unhappiest person in America right now. He never wanted this job. He wanted to use it as a jumping off point for other business ventures. Somehow, he ended up winning and he's no longer able to do whatever he wants like he did in the past. Acting the strongman worked in the business world. Politics is showing him to be not a strongman but a cowardly bully who runs away every time somebody doesn't do what he wants them to.

Few people are saying that. Most people see border security as a need. However, there is a difference between securing a border against letting in criminals and villainizing immigrants as a group. Building a wall will justify the latter.

It'll probably be treated the same way the Senate Intelligence Committee treated the CIA torture scandal where a summary is released. The full report is probably treated like The Pentagon Papers where it stays classified for 40+ years before finally being released.

In other words what is this path to citizenship ****ery.
The argument is likely that the act of illegally emigrating to the US makes them criminals. Since they are criminals, they can be punished as criminals by being jailed or deported.
