He's right. This has been the GOP since it embraced the Dixiecrats/Southern Strategy. Trump just says the **** out loud now.

It never ceases to amaze how trump-like you are.

clovis is just doing his usual thing where he has a kneejerk reaction to defend any "small-c conservative" in america as if they're somehow different/can't be lumped in with the rest of these moronic trumpers- because, at least before trump, he'd be a GOP voter in USA#1. and now he's projecting his lack of knowledge re: american history onto the rest of us.

I'm too lazy to find and link to the old DVaut posts about Trumpism being a ground-up phenomenon, but they were some good ones.

I agree, Trump is a racist and the GOP have been racist for decades. However racism is not the central tenet of trumpism. Authoritarianism is the central tenet and that is very new for the GOP. It is from this tenet that all the worst parts of his presidecy are derived. The anti-media, anti-intellectual attacks on fact. The calls for fidelity to the king. The hatred of checks and balances. The very erosion of democracy.

Racism is a throughline but Trumpism is absolutely not the same thing as the GOP even 5 years ago.

I don’t see how the GOP walks it back to the days of Mitt Romney. They’ve just given their base the Attitude Era of GOP politics, no one is going to tune in to watch Hulk Hogan leg drop the Iron Sheik. There’s some sort of tectonic shift that’s going to have to happen in the next ten years.

This is exactly right. The GOP created trumpism but catering to their fringe so much the fringe became their mainstream.

What would president Jeb! being doing differently to trump? Not demeanor, I mean actual policies that affect real people? Same hideous tax cuts, same children in cages, same rapist judges on the scotus. We'd probably already be at war with Iran.

I agree policy wise they are identical but that is because trump doesn’t care about policy at all and let’s the GOP run it completely.

Trump cares about power and prestige and his real damage is not policy. Just like they have for hundreds of years policies can be reversed (set aside SCOTUS stacking for now).

Trumps damage is erosion of democracy and social trust. Those are much harder to reverse.

and certainly not putting the jackboot of the govt to the throat of poors and minorities, suppressing the vote, initiating/supporting sham investigations of political opponents, and gutting federal ethics/oversight mechanisms. that's obviously totally new stuff for the GOP

What good is democracy if ~half the time it leads to this (and the other half is a meek technocrat like obama whose incremental improvements get overturned instantly)?

In what alternate reality has the GOP not always been authoritarian?
