Well, that would be entirely different.

Exactly. End derail.

Have you even seen the other religions?

Well, just try saying what you actually mean the first time. Good walkback, though.

Mormonism was the original Trumpism. Taking a blatantly obvious con man who talks the purest nonsense and being like "THIS GUY SHOULD LEAD OUR NATION".

Exactly. It’s also insanely misogynistic and racist, even by religious standards.

Most of my family is Mormon for what’s its worth.

lol. It’s not a walk back. It’s called assuming a level of sophistication of your audience. My assumption was correct for everyone else itt, just not you.

I think like 10 years ago they got around to saying god didn’t really mean the stuff on the gold plates about black people being demons.

I think I've had some rungood with respect to Mormons. I haven't met that many, but all of the ones I've met have been intelligent, nice people. In most cases, I only found out their religion by chance.

I've never met anyone like most of the people in Big Love, for example.

We don't need to dredge up Clovis' greatest hits, but given some of the hilariously bad takes you've posted, I don't see how my reading the words you actually wrote is an error on my part. But you do you, I guess.

I’ve met hundreds and they are all very nice people just under the spell of an awful cult.

None of them even know most of the truth about their faith as it’s kept hidden. Like Scientologists, they are strongly discouraged from using sources outside the LDS to learn anything about their religion.

Krakauer’s Under the Banner of Heaven is worth a read if you are interested.

Mormons are like any other religious people: most of them are casual moderates that live their lives the same way you or I do and are pretty chill but then there are a tiny minority of dangerous fanatical dickholes.

I think most people only encounter Mormonism via South Park or missionaries, so there's this perception that these people and their beliefs are substantially weirder than, say hardcore Catholics or Evangelicals.

Wow. I miss those halcyon days of long ago when the thread derails concerned whether or not Louis CK should be allowed to have a career in comedy.

To each his own I guess.

Thanks guys for the weekly reminder about how incredibly annoying smug internet atheists are.

Aren't all Mormons basically required to be missionaries at some point? If so, I would think that if one were to engage with them in that context, you would actually get the truest sense of what the religion is all about.

The Trump presidency made a deep descent in December. The departures of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, the appointment of senior persons of lesser experience, the abandonment of allies who fight beside us, and the president’s thoughtless claim that America has long been a “sucker” in world affairs all defined his presidency down.

It is well known that Donald Trump was not my choice for the Republican presidential nomination. After he became the nominee, I hoped his campaign would refrain from resentment and name-calling. It did not. When he won the election, I hoped he would rise to the occasion. His early appointments of Rex Tillerson, Jeff Sessions, Nikki Haley, Gary Cohn, H.R. McMaster, Kelly and Mattis were encouraging. But, on balance, his conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions this month, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office.

I liked it better before the right commandeered the word 'smug'. Back in my day churchy people were 'smug'.

Eh in my parents day it was a hardcore sin to eat meat on Fridays as a member of the Catholic Church. It was a ticket straight to hell. Then one day they are like “Oh that? Don’t worry about that.”

The new words religion and nonsense are fairly interchangeable. Even the more rational religions have some pretty absurd things going on.

Basically you're saying only the hardcore guys have a "true" sense of what the religion is. Would you say the same thing about other religions? The only true Catholics are the ones who do missionary work or join convents? If so, these "true Catholics" are quite different from the vast majority of Catholics you encounter.

Not everyone is suited to be an atheist, so just live and let live. If we're going to be playing the name a good idea found in religion game, name a functional majority atheist society.
