The real justification for maintaining a huge military apparatus and investing in tons of military tech and dumping tons of money into armaments is to make sure there are no major interstate wars. Since global trade and the liberal order is doing a lot of the heavy lifting there, and laisser faire, laissez passer now rules the day -- what's left for states to do? Spending a bunch of time and energy pursuing unorganized gangs might just be their top priority in that context.

The 'correct' answer here is of course that we have no need for huge military and security state apparatus, but since they exist and the modern state has transitioned into only addressing effects and never causes (by design), billions of dollars and global focus chasing a few hundred idiots around are the kinds of outcomes that are predictable.
War on drugs, war on immigrants, war on crime too.

I haven't thought about all this in years. It felt like I was on the cusp of something profound but I was probably just being a f**king *******.
When you say you have a crush on someone, you're emphasizing the "wanting to be good friends" part not the "****ing" part, because the first one is the much higher standard to meet for a typical young male. /derail

I recall something about a swamp as well. Roads can be handy for that situation.

Well not just that, but also there's the detail that the USA doesn't really have a lot of enemies, or at least not with ocean crossing ability anyways. Which of course raises the question of why the US has so many tanks to begin with, but maybe that's an issue for another time.

People are slowly starting to adjust to Trump. No reasonable person can take this guy seriously anymore. He's said a ridiculous number of things that he hasn't followed through on and probably never will.

It's like listening to a child. That child will never say anything meaningful but you "listen" because you don't want the kid to cry and complain about it later. After that, you get down to business and talk to the adults in the room.

The answer is simple: if we stop building unnecessary tanks, we might not be able to build them again once they become necessary.

So we light a few hundred million dollars a year on fire to make sure that if a war breaks out in 2039 we still have a bunch of old, probably useless, tanks.

Military industrial complex has a lot to do with it. US army has repeatedly said they got enough tanks and mothballed thousands of tanks but some Congressmen refuse to let some factories close.

Even without the complex we'd still have thousands of tanks though, if only to keep in NATO countries and other allied nations (such as SK) to deter unfriendly nations.

Also finally tanks are relatively cheap, both to purchase and to maintain. Compared to fighter jets and naval ships anyway

It would have been made more obvious by people with too much time on their hands. We would have seen entire YouTube videos dedicated to proving it.

Not saying he wasn't on uppers though. Amphetamines are known for inducing runny noses. Plus they'd help with his ****ty concentration and attention span.

Anyway, kind of what I expected from Trump. Kind of sad that this is the norm.

So Venezuela is going to be the GOP rallying cry against single payer?

I knew that speech was familiar

You have to know it was Miller who wrote that speech.

In Britain, unlike the US, private owners are permitted to drive tanks on the public roads. Once in Canonbury Square in London I was waiting to cross the road while a phalanx of M4 Shermans and M3 White half-tracks, with all the crews in period uniforms, trundled past on their way to an historic-vehicle rally -- down in Kent, I think. On the Essex Road not far from there I was once overtaken by a Scorpion light tank, the most popular NATO model for private owners. Here's a Scorpion down by Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and so on.

Main battle tanks are as far as I know road legal if they've got the right lights and rubber pads on the tracks, but nobody runs them on the road for reasons of economy -- private owners keep them on country estates and hire them out for mud-plugging tank-driving courses.

"totally destroy" and "Rocketman" sound like Trump personal touches.

I wonder how long it will take for terrorists to figure out that you can go on quite a rampage with a tank.

As soon as they get GTA III in Pakistan.

No worries then. Once the alert gets up to 5 stars they are done for.

Though of course one might question the wisdom of having your main battle tank incapable of using the roads in the capital city of the nation it's supposedly designed to protect, but whatever.
They'll soon have the problem solved.

This allowed the Supreme Court to be rebuilt in Reagan's image, which made it legal to erect poll taxes and other nonsense to try to stop blacks from voting, which drove down numbers, combined with a bunch of rehashed "they’re all the same, vote third party" nonsense that led to a maniac with ADD and a love of violence winning the presidency.
