Dammit, I can't do a poll with these options for several areas? Halp?

I can't even delete this thing... great.

I wanted to do a poll with several areas (legal arbitration, criminal law, common defense, health care, police force, financial regulation, print currency, etc...) and allow users to select the role they feel govt should play. I think it would be much more insightful and better reflect people's attitudes regarding govt than Nielsio's poll on size and scope, which doesn't allow one to specify the scope by area. For some reason, I thought you could enter items on the left and then have a column of choices on the right, as in a survey.

But it doesn't look possible here... Would a mod please lock or delete this? Thanks.

If such a level of detail were feasible it very well might be useful. But it isn't. And there's lots of correlation between the various categories (someone who doesn't think the government should build the roads won't support public education). But your fail helps illustrate why Neilsio's poll, while not perfect, is actually pretty good.

Of course there would be some correlation, why would that be bad? That's the kind of info we're trying to ascertain when we investigate people's attitudes towards govt.

I'm not saying it would be bad. I'm just saying it would be difficult to get all that information into poll form. You'd have literally dozens of different options.

No, you could have the 6 options I have above. You'd have a dozen or so basic areas. It doesn't have to be to gnat's ass detail. But what does it mean to say I want a "medium state"? In fact, I want heavy state involvement in some areas and no state involvement in others. Nielsio's poll captures none of that nuance, imo. And that nuance is really the stuff worth discussing in a political forum if you want to get beyond "govt lulz".

As Neilsio said, you can explain your vote as a short post in the thread. I love it how no statists are voting just because they don't want to pick "big state."

Or because I just explained why the poll doesn't capture my beliefs. Seems by your comments that you actually prefer a crappy poll aimed at hanging "big statists lolz" banners on people. Not surprising, and exactly the reason this forum is becoming very boring fast.

What are your beliefs?

If I could make this poll, you'd see quite clearly. But, since you'd rather just have "small, medium, or big", my beliefs are "other".
12-11-2008 , 01:27 AM
lol you can only express your views on the state in poll form?

And if I voted in Nielsio's poll, you still wouldn't. Which was my point when you told me to gtfo of that thread. Have a good night.

I'm genuinely curious as to what your political views are that don't fit into any of Neilsio's categories. But if you want to be a prick, mission accomplished I guess.

You have an odd way of showing your curiosity about others' beliefs.

But I'm the prick. Okay. With that, I'm really out.

Huh? I wasn't talking about you. I have no idea if you're a statist or not, since you won't say.

You win. Enjoy your forum. No more dissent from me. I acquiesce. Peace.

FWIW I prefer a "consequentialism/deontology" divide, with several subcategories.
